    Torn A’Tsundere

Avalon War Machine, Eastern Dead Lands

In the Dead Lands, men bore tears of blood and bone.  In the Dead Lands, men died alone, with nobody to blame but their own hubris.  Raging spirits roared toward the heavens as fighters clashed steel and Aura in a battle to the bitter death.  Blood spilled on this cracked, dry patch of soil for the first time in two hundred years and it would not be the last by the grace of the next lout who called himself a House Lord.

Forta Gravitas, blade of the ancients and doom of the lesser souls who dared to stand in her way, cut a swath through gut and bone.  Her tail quivered and her ears twitched.  She tightened her grip on Mercy and Salvation, two hulking hunks of iron fashioned into edgeless blades.  She swung down and cracked the soil, sending rivers of shockwaves that rippled the Auras of lesser men.

She leaped forward and cleaved through twenty fighters in one lashing cut that severed spines.  Blood washed across Mercy.  Salvation cleaved through another pair of fighters who tried to parry the blow.  Blood spattered on her boots as she darted through the aftermath of a House war far outside the boundaries of the lush lands her ancestors had settled centuries ago in the first age.

Winds whipped at her tail and lashed at her blackened hair.  Forta whistled a tune and kept moving forward, her gaze focused, searching.  Where did you run off to Lexi?  Forta stopped at a modest impasse.  She’d begun to attract attention, it seemed.  It wasn’t what she wanted right now, but on the other hand …

She slammed Mercy into the soil and hoisted Salvation across her shoulder as a platoon of able-bodied soldiers surrounded her.  She bit her lip.  Fifty.  Not exactly a warm up.  She rolled her eyes.

Are we doing this or what?

She let go of Mercy and gestured with one finger to bring on the pain.  As if on her command, twenty men rushed her, thirty more to either flank.  The tactics of cowards.  Well, they did their homework on Beast Kin at least, so that was saying something.  However …

She grabbed and threw Mercy through the stockpile of soldiers heading toward her and leaped through the chasm she’d carved out.  Forta landed on her feet with poise, picking up her weapon and racing onward to a rocky outcropping.  She ran until her lungs burned and her legs finally grew tired.  Forta had caught a glimpse of it, the sight of Lexi strolling right through the quarry beside the battleground.  Avalon’s House Lord paid her for each kill, but the contract was null and void if so much as a migraine befell his precious empath.
