Let me tell you a little bit about myself and the aims of this book before we delve into the topic of self defence. I have been studying martial arts for most of my life. I started Judo when I was around 6 years old and after being repeatedly dropped on my head by a lad twice my size I soon realised that perhaps this wasn’t the style for me. Possible not the first thing you want to read about in a book on self defence, but please bare with me. You see, there are hundreds of different martial arts out there and thousands of various techniques, in time you will see that every technique works and every technique doesn’t, it’s all about the situation you are in. Nine years later I joined a local Karate club (more about Karate later) as my best friend was an instructor at the club. I joined to as a means to simply keep in touch when I left school, little did I realise back then that in 19 years time I would be a Martial Artist with black belt grades in two completely different systems and teach self defence and conflict resolution (full time) to law enforcement professionals.
In my nearly twenty years experience in martial arts I hold a 2nd Dan in Wado-Ryu Karate, a 3rd Dan in Aikido and have also studied Judo, Kickboxing, JuJitsu, Tai Chi (and some obscure arts that I have forgotten most of their names). I have trained with the best this country has to offer in terms of Aikido, Karate and Self Defence and hope to impart some of my knowledge to you.
This book is designed with the untrained individual in mind, but it also holds valuable information that that every martial artist and self defence instructor should know.
In this book I cover tender topics such as the law around self defence and the medical implications from hitting different areas of the human body. I am not a lawyer or a doctor, I am only trying to impart some basic knowledge and take no responsibility for the actions taken by individuals after they have read this material.
I also mention various different styles of martial arts and give a brief description of each of them. This information is from my own research either practicing the art (in most cases) or the internet, and where possible I will give you the links at the end of the book. The descriptions are very brief, it is not my intention to cause offense to anybody practicing an art and I have tried to be unbiased.
It is my intention however that by the end of this book, you the reader will have an appreciation and desire to start training in an art yourself. You will have some basic knowledge and tools to help manage conflict, and you will have an understanding of the law and confidence that law will back you if you obey some simple rules.
I hope you find this beneficial and enjoy the read.

Use of Force and the Law
This is probably the trickiest topic to discuss. I am by no means a lawyer and it is not my intention to go into case law in depth in this chapter as most of you would be asleep by the end of the page. Many of our laws concerning self defense have come through Common Law, the first
