CHAPTER 1: The Dog Is Acting Strange!
Koby felt the sunshine gently touch the side of his face while he lay comfortably sleeping under his favorite bed sheets his uncle had given him last Christmas. Spread across the top of the sheets, were pictures of various olden day airplanes.
Above his bed was a red, one meter long, wooden model airplane that he and his grandfather had made together. It hung from the ceiling on an angle as if it was really soaring through the sky.
Koby had always loved airplanes. He knew everything there was to know about them, despite only being eight years old.
No-one in his family quite knew why he was so fascinated in them, but ever since he was a baby, whenever a plane would fly by, he would point up and smile.
Koby disappointed his parents when his first words spoken were not Mama
or Dada
. Instead, it was Boeing
.
Koby knew it must have still been early in the morning because the sun always touched his face through the curtains in the summer at sunrise. He was glad he still had a few hours left of sleep before he had to wake up for school.
Suddenly, Koby felt a tug on his pajama pants. He looked at the feet of his bed and there was Gordon, the one year old German shepherd he had rescued from the street exactly ten months ago. At the time, Gordon was so small, thin and dirty that no-one in the family had any idea what kind of dog it actually was.
Koby begged his parents to keep it and promised he would look after it and feed it every day. His parents agreed, and Koby who was over-joyed at having his own puppy, kept his promise. Koby and Gordon had the greatest times together and played almost every day. Gordon sat at Koby’s feet when he wrote his homework. And Koby made sure Gordon got enough exercise and was always well fed before going to school.
When Gordon and Koby both finished eating their breakfast, Gordon would always walk with Koby to school and then run home by himself where he would eagerly wait for Koby’s return after school. Gordon would listen for the school bell in the afternoon which he could hear clearly from the house.
Koby kicked at Gordon gently.
No Gordon, I’m still sleeping,
he told the dog sternly.
Gordon kept pulling at Koby’s ankles. Koby ignored Gordon. He was determined to stay in bed for one more hour. After all, it was only five o’clock!
Gordon tugged frantically at Koby’s pajama pants one last time before giving up and walking out of his bedroom. Koby was glad that he was left alone for one more hour of sleep, but couldn’t help but wonder what on Earth had gotten into Gordon?
When Koby’s alarm clock finally went off, Koby reluctantly got out of bed. He was having a wonderful dream about soaring through the sky in a small single engine plane above farmlands with sheep dancing to loud rock music.
He didn’t quite understand the dream, but he certainly enjoyed flying the plane!
Koby put on his rabbit slippers and watched the floppy ears bounce as he walked down the hallway to the kitchen.
As he entered the kitchen, he expected Gordon to greet him excitedly as he always did in the morning. However, this morning, Gordon was no-where to be seen.
Gordon!
yelled Koby.
Strange, Gordon always came to Koby when he called.
Koby began preparing the dog food. When he was done he placed it on the floor nearby his chair.
Koby’s mom walked in the
