The men have returned from the hunt loaded down with mammoth for the coming winter. There must be a great celebration to honor the spirits of the noble beasts. But it's to be a special celebration, unlike any Sudra has exprienced, as the clan's Witch Woman declares that all must give thanks for the blessings they have received by sharing their bodies freely with one another long into the night. But despite the carnal pleasures, Sudra's thoughts are troubled by the sullen behavior of the man she thought would claim her, but chose another instead.

Easi spoke, her soft sultry voice melting through the quiet. She addressed the clan with the confident air of mystery her office granted her. The Witch Woman was revered by the clan, and one touched by the Sun Goddess herself, her hair shining red like the very fire she was mistress of, was a particular blessing. She led the spirit of the clan, each of its members, and their collective essence was her purview. She knew the secrets, she knew the mysteries, and she knew the great and honored traditions.

The language of the clan was rich and complex, spoken sounds nuanced with hand signs and body language. Each person had their own mannerisms they incorporated in their expression, so that talking to a person and fully understanding them was only possible after knowing them for many years, and without some level of personal intimacy, such as when members of different clans spoke, the language took on a stiff formality.

All present knew Easi well, though she performing her mystical duties, as now, she limited her expression, choosing to sound more formal, with oddly timed mannerisms to impart a sense of the immaterial, and a spiritual nature to her meaning.

“We have honored the great mammoths, sending the spirits on to the next life,” she began, “and I have read the signs and the meanings hidden in their passage beyond. We are favored by the Mother, and the Father, and tonight also by the Daughter, whose camp fire burns brightly in the sky this night.” Easi raised her hand, indicating the camp fire of the Daughter, a twinkling red tinged dot low in the southern sky.

The bonfire raged behind Easi, and her hair picked up the light and seemed to amplify it, making it look as if she herself was a flame against the darkness.

“The last time of these three blessings at the same time is not within living memory, but the tradition of accepting the blessing is known. The Mother, the Father, the Daughter, the Mammoth, these spirits are honored with flesh, and warmth, and love, and the free giving and taking of pleasure,” Easi said, her voice rising and falling with meaning.

Sudra’s pulse quickened as she came to understand what the Witch Woman’s words meant.

Easi stepped forward, slipping her day skins from her shoulders, letting them fall to the ground. She stepped towards the assembled clan completely naked, the bright red hair on her head a fiery mass of curls, and the dark red shadow of hair covering her woman’s place a promise of what the night held for the clan.

The hunters came back on the afternoon of the eighth day, loaded down with mammoth meat, pelts, and bone.

Sudra was on the rise above the caves when they came, gathering the large nuts that fell from the trees at this time of year, and was the first to spot the men coming around the bend at the base of the valley that led to their settlement.
