    A Book of Business Philosophy - Ken Lord

    A BOOK OF BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY

    (FINDING YOUR OWN SUCCESS)

    By: Ken Lord

    Copyright 2012; Smashwords Edition

    Foreword

    I am an interested reader of the poetry of Robert W. Service, 1874-1958. Most of his poetry deals with the Yukon Territory of Canada and his love for the land. Much of my personal philosophy parallels Service’s, but I should like to begin this work by quoting two stanzas—the first and the last—from his poem The Spell of the Yukon.

    I wanted the gold and I sought it;

    I scrabbled and mucked like a slave.

    Was it famine or scurvy, I fought it;

    I hurled my youth into a grave.

    I wanted the gold, and I got it --

    Came out with a fortune last fall, --

    Yet somehow life’s not what I thought it,

    And somehow the gold isn’t all.

    Between the first and last stanzas he talks about his experiences back in civilization and of his desire to return to the land. He talks about the scenery, the risks, his involvement with God, and the blessings of his life. And then he ends his poem this way:

    There’s gold and it’s haunting and haunting;

    It’s luring me on as of old;

    Yet it isn’t the gold that I’m wanting

    So much as just finding the gold.

    It’s the great, big, broad land ‘way up yonder,

    It’s the forest where silence has lease,

    It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,

    It’s the stillness that fills me with peace.

    In this beautiful bit of poetry is a pretty good statement of philosophy. It says to me that I may work very hard to achieve what I have set before myself, but I ought not to overlook the fact that working is not an end unto itself. There are, indeed, very important other things in life—among which are family and God. I particularly like the line that says, Yet it isn’t the gold that I’m wanting so much as just finding the gold. To me that says this—I may or may not achieve success and riches as the world defines them—but the process of working for them will provide a good portion of the reward I will obtain. Being a person who cannot simply do nothing, I find it assuring that my work can provide satisfaction, whether or not I ever save a farthing. This philosophy is pretty much key to what you will hopefully enjoy in the following pages.

    AUTHOR’S PREFACE

    Among my best work (in my never to be humble opinion) is a series of presentations made as the year turned. Initially, I had put together a series of presentations—resolutions, really—whereby it was my intention to operate in the new year. The concepts were not original. They were chapter titles from The Greatest Salesman In The World, by Og Mandino. I freely used the titles, but the text that follows those titles is entirely my own.

    Because of the businesses I created, and because of the consulting I have done, I feel the need to share a business and personal philosophy, in the belief that in restating it to myself, I will gird my self-encouragement for yet the next time period. What I’ve done is to take that series of presentations, expand their perspectives, expound upon them in ways the reader may find useful, and present them in book form. Perhaps they will provide the encouragement you may seek.

    These are quotes from Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in his book Enthusiasm Makes The Difference.

    Tell yourself all the good news you know.

    Enthusiasm is the spice of life.

    Enthusiasm will improve your personality.

    Every morning presents a new set of facts.

    Keep the fire of enthusiasm burning under your goals.

    Enthusiasm persuades. Persuasion sells.

    It takes guts to practice enthusiasm.

    Fear is removable.

    Enthusiasm makes hard days good days.

    Come alive with enthusiasm.

    Forget yourself and tension forgets you.

    Enthusiasm is good medicine.

    Enthusiasm is equal to the toughest problems.

    Enthusiasm—powerful motivation that makes things happen.

    Put up a real fight—enthusiasm will go for you.

    Enthusiasm builds power under your difficulties.

    Chapter 1: THE RESOLUTIONS

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU KNEW IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO FAIL?

    Chapter 1.1: Today I Begin a New Life

    No matter how the last year was completed, a new year is a new life and a new set of opportunities awaiting each of us.

    This new life begins in a place of outstanding opportunity. The fields are ripe unto harvest and I must do the work of the harvest. I am committed to my work and to the goals I’ve set to achieve that work.

    This new life creates challenges and provides the guidance and wisdom of my peers. I will listen to the guidance and seek the challenges. I will expect the ultimate and provide the best effort of which I am capable.

    Every new life begins with a seed—and I will begin with the seed of success firmly implanted in my thoughts and my actions.

    If I have thus far experienced success, I will build on that success. If I have experienced failure, I will cast failure behind me and remove the word from my vocabulary. Failure would be my inability
