Martin knew it was good advice for a less than ideal situation, but he still wasn’t happy about it. Neither saw another way though to get Jonas to sign over his rights to Aspen Estates.

Once Martin said goodbye to James and retired to his bedroom, Bruce brought him Jonas’ letter. I told the boy to make sure to give me any letters he writes, Bruce informed his boss.

Very good, Martin praised his loyal footman. Make sure you burn that one and any others. I won’t have him messing up my plans now that I’m so close to finally owning Aspen Estates. We cannot allow him to retain any of his old connections. He needs to trust me only, at least until he signs over all of his rights.

And what then? Bruce asked his boss with a knowing half smile.

"Once his usefulness has expired, poor Master Jonas will have an unfortunate accident.

    Prologue

After Madeline and Elias left to begin their life as man and wife, the guests mingled and celebrated with food.

Bartzen headed to Rebecca’s table, to fulfill his agreement to pretend to be her boyfriend. Jonas said he would follow to be polite, but his real purpose was to talk to Rachelle. He couldn’t stand the thought of not having her around next school year and hoped he could change her mind.

She turned around and saw him approaching. How are you? Jonas asked.

Very well, thank you. I’m here with a date, she announced. As Rachelle’s date turned around, both Jonas’ and Bartzen’s mouths dropped open.

Bartzen and Jon-ass, good to see you again, Billy said, outstretching his hand.

Both boys ignored Billy’s invitation to shake his hand, What are you doing here? Jonas asked instead. They hadn’t seen Billy since their time at Bushton Hall. They certainly never expected to see him again, especially not with Rachelle.

I’m here with my girlfriend, Billy answered, as he kissed Rachelle’s hand. It was obvious to both boys that Billy knew all about Jonas’ history with Rachelle and just wanted to rub salt in his wounds.

Jonas stayed busy most of the night, but he still couldn’t get his mind off of the image of Billy kissing Rachelle’s hand.

How can she be with someone like that? Jonas asked Bartzen as they turned in for the night.

You can’t let it bother you, Bartzen answered but knew it was hollow advice. Sooner or later, she will see him for the snake he is.

Things in the house returned to normal the next day. The servants had cleaned up after the wedding, and it was almost as if it had never even occurred.

Ms. Roxanne still spent as much time as possible following Daniel around, making sure he wasn’t up to anything. For the time being, the only suspicious thing she found him doing was receiving many telegrams.

She finally got her chance to see what was written in the telegram when she intercepted the delivery boy, and immediately opened the message.

Is that for me? Daniel asked
