I'm a native Floridian, retired from the US Army, I started writing in the army, mostly training and tech manuals. Boring stuff, but it whetted my interest in writing. I've written sci-fi, thrillers, mysteries, humor, fantasies, horror, and more. I'm now living in NC. While in the army, I served in air defense artillery, military intelligence, and psychological operations. I also worked in Federal Civil Service as a quality assurance specialist, ammunition surveillance. I love writing, reading, most kinds of music, and animals--especially dogs.

    The Spirit of Mark Rollins

Private Investigator Mark Rollins died on a cold, drizzly night in September. At first, he didn't realize that he'd died; in fact, he wasn't truly aware of his death until he saw his own body lying on the concrete surface in front of the convenience store.

He had been waiting for days to see this game, and had arranged his schedule so that he would be free this night. Now he could only hope that he wouldn't get an emergency call from any of his clients during the game.

Just my luck one of them will call with some kind of problem.

Fifteen minutes before game time he discovered he was out of snacks. If he hurried, he could make it to the convenience store and be back before the kick off.

He parked in front of the store, jumped out of his car, and lowered his head as he ran through the drizzling rain to the store entrance. As he approached the store, he noticed that something was wrong. He cursed himself for leaving the house unarmed, something he rarely did.

Damn. I was so intent on getting back by game time I could think of nothing else.

Through the plate glass he saw the clerk--a young girl barely out of her teens--lying on the floor. A man wearing a ski mask was going through the cash drawer.

A second masked man appeared at the door, holding a handgun. The man pushed the door open.

C'mon man. Get in here, quick. Do like I say and you won't get hurt.

Mark glanced at the clerk and saw a splotch of blood on her blouse. He knew that the robbers had no intention of letting him live; he had little choice; Fight or flight. Unarmed, he faced two men who were armed. It would be foolish to confront them, and it would be equally foolish to step into the store as they had ordered.

He spun around and ran. He'd taken only a couple of steps when his mind seemed to blank out, and he had an odd sensation of falling forward. But he managed to check his
