Many have claimed that Duncan Edwards was potentially the greatest footballer to emerge from the British Isles. Unquestionably he was the greatest schoolboy footballer the British game has ever produced, a midfield Colossus who dominated top flight, European and International games while still a teenager.
Edwards tragic early death in the Munich Air Disaster has left many to ponder what might have been. Here United historian Iain McCartney deals purely in the facts of the player's rise through the football ranks, using contemporary newspaper reports and objective opinions of the day in a fitting tribute to a player whose career had already touched the heights but ended at the age of just 23.
