Day One
An old man was gazing at the rising sun, walking around, enjoying the scenery of his, once small and picturesque, village turning into a major city. The economic boom had made this small village blossom into a huge metropolis in less than twenty years. And given the age of the old man, and the amount of people this side of China, a village was still a urban place populated by over one million people. Now it was closing up to the ten million people mark. The skyscrapers pricked the skies in every way you looked. The old man sat down under the shade of a pavilion, greeting his neighbors who were enjoying a nice game of mahjong. Fifty years ago, while the old man was in his prime, newly married and father of a pair of twins, he walked the same shaded path to the same pavilion, the scenery then was endless fields of tea plantation. Now there was no other greenery than the little park pavilion, beside the river, he was currently sitting in.
His side pocket vibrated and he picked up the cellular phone and answered. Sometime ago, the old man had set the phone into vibrate without being able to set it back, and he just wanted to raise the volume of the ring tone. He didn't like these new modern phones, they hardly worked at all and nowadays you could never be left alone. It was one of his children calling.
Son, everyday at the same time!
he said with a slight grin on his face.
You know me father, sticking to my daily routine!
The son, a heavily obese man with a sleeping disorder was at this point sitting on the bathroom, with the Ningbo Daily, today’s newspaper on his lap and an empty roll of toilet paper to his right.
Have you called your mother yet? She always likes your little chats, you should come and visit more often!
The sounds of his father were heard through the receiver.
I will be taking a vacation next week, I was thinking about coming down and visit, but don't tell mum, I want it to be a surprise!
The obese man says and takes a piece of the newspaper to wipe his sweaty forehead. I've talked to sister, she will also be there, and her husband to!
He could almost sense the smile on his fathers face now, a family reunion, and it wasn't even new-year.
And what about your job, brought down any more bad guys?
Asked his father and chuckled, bringing down bad guys was a new expression for him, he heard it last time his son called.
No dad, yesterday was a slow day!
Slow day? Isn't it good that no crimes are committed?
His father now with a wrinkled forehead.
No dad, crimes are still being committed, it's just that we have not had any luck getting the bad guys to justice..!
