One Hunt is an old family name that I am proud of and it goes back many years. Catherine (my Lone Walker and my wife) and I live in our mystical log cabin on the top of a fog enshrouded mountain with our animals and live in solitude, peace and harmony with nature. We know that we are soul mates and spirits from the past. We will be together again in the future just as we have been before. With this story we hope that we have brought the same love into your life as we have in ours.

    SHIPS ON THE HORIZON

Brown Squirrel and I were sitting on a log near the edge of the forest, relaxing after picking berries for tonight’s meal. I felt my skin being cooled by the soft ocean breeze as we looked out over the clear blue waters of the ocean. With half opened eyes, I watched the ocean birds dipping down between the waves and listened to the sounds the waves made as they crashed and washed over rocks near the beach. It was a hypnotic sound and the waves seemed to have a rhythm of their own, first one big wave and then five or six little ones. It was a good day to just sit and relax watching the waves and the puffy white clouds. I was daydreaming about upcoming festivities and some of the handsome warriors that would be there. I felt a cool breeze and saw a storm forming out over the ocean. I opened my eyes wider because I thought I saw something strange far out on the water.

I jumped up and said excitedly pointing out beyond the jetty where we fished, Brown Squirrel, look, way out on the water, just on the edge of the horizon, is that a strange craft of some sort?

She squinted her eyes, trying to focus on the spot where I was pointing. At first it was just a black spot on the horizon but it grew larger the closer it got to us. As it moved in our direction I saw that it was a strange looking craft, similar to our canoes, except much larger. The craft was very long with strange black and yellow markings and had large cloths hanging on poles that caught the wind. The wind seemed to blow the craft over the water like a seed floating on the surface. We never saw anything like this, and it was much larger than any of our canoes. Finally it stopped before getting to the shore and then the people got into smaller craft, similar to our canoes, and then came ashore.

They were all dressed in very strange clothing, had pale skin, and most had hair on their faces. Their gait was unsteady, and they all appeared to be in a weakened state and many fell as the landed onto the beach. They all sat on the sand and began yelling in a foreign language. I couldn’t understand what they were saying but they appeared to be very excited jumping up and down, dancing and scurrying about like ants. They gathered around a large man that looked like he was their chief. They all listened as he appeared to be giving orders while holding up and shaking a long metallic spear like article.

I wanted to get a closer look at them, so I said to Brown Squirrel, Follow me, I am going to creep closer to see what they look like. We quietly and slowly crept through the undergrowth while remaining hidden from their view. Soon we were close enough to make them out clearly. I quietly parted the large green leaves of the plant we were hiding behind. I then peered through the leaves watching these strange men. They were all too busy to see us, especially since we were camouflaged so well.

I quickly turned to Brown Squirrel with my face all aglow and said with an impish grin, See that big one with the long curly hair, he is really handsome. I would like to know him better. I have never seen long curly hair colored yellow like straw.

Spotted Fawn, you better find out first if he is friendly, Then she said to me while laughing with a contemptuous grin. What happened to your interest in Little Bull? Every day you seem to change who you want to be with.

Nodding and looking toward the ground, but still having a smirk on my face, I said, You are right, but right now I think we should hurry back to the village and warn everyone of these intruders.

Even though these humans looked peaceful, we knew we needed to be cautious as we had been attacked recently by a tribe from the north. We didn’t want to bring any troubles to the tribe by letting dangerous people know the location of our encampment. We quickly ran back to the camp and went directly to the village chief to tell him what we saw. It turned into a race to see who could get back to the village first. Brown Squirrel having slightly longer legs won, but just barely.

Big Horn, the Village Chief, said after patiently waiting for us to catch our breath and with a very inquisitive look, asked Spotted Fawn what have you seen that made you and Brown Squirrel run back here so fast? Your faces are all red and you like you are going to burst.

There is a strange ship with unusual looking humans that arrived on our shores, Brown Squirrel and I shouted together in unison. They are very strange looking, with hair on their faces, unusual clothing and their canoe is larger than anything we have ever seen.

Standing tall and looking very statesmanlike, Chief Big Horn said, We know nothing of these humans, and hopefully they arrived here in peace. I will send warriors to keep a watch on them until we know what their intentions are.

These strange humans were watched from a distance, never knowing they were being observed. They appeared to be peaceful and seemed only to be only looking for food. They picked mostly fruits, as their hunting abilities seemed to be lacking. I often joined the warriors that were watching them, as I was fascinated by the tall man with yellow hair. I later learned by watching and listening to them as they spoke, that this man’s name was Eirik and he appeared to be their chief. He was very
