Tofi and the Rainbow Fish - Pusch Commey
Chapter 1
A long time ago there was a tiny village far away. It had many fine cows and many hills. Its name was Esilengeni. The people of Esilengeni were good with cows. They ate the meat and drank the milk of cows. When a man wanted to get married, he paid lobola with cows. The richest man was the one with the most cows, the most wives and the most children.
p8Gogo tells her story
Today Esilengeni is a big beautiful town in the kingdom of the Zulus. It has one hundred fish factories. These factories give jobs to many people. Others from all over the world go there to look for a better life. Esilengeni has become a miracle town. It has grown bigger and bigger with each passing year.
Every week tons of fish are packed into boxes and sold to supermarkets all over the country. Some are also packed onto ships and sold to other countries. Different types of fish are caught in the rivers and sea near Esilengeni: sardines, tuna, pilchards, salmon, trout, kingklip, streppies, pinkies and sometimes even sharks. When you go to Esilengeni today there is a giant statue of a great black shark at the entrance to the town.
Nobody knows how a small village with cows became a rich one with big fish. The only person who can tell you is an old, old lady who lives on the highest hill. Some call her Tofi. Others call her Gogo. But you can call her Gogo
