Mike has watched Lynda for months. He wants her. He’s asked her out several times only to be told “no.” Her reasoning baffles him; he sees no problem with her being eighteen years his senior. Mike’s muscles bunched from the exertion of lifting the heavy boxes. He felt the sweat rolling over his temple and neck, dampening the collar of his shirt. The degree to which he perspired gave testament to the heat wave that had taken hold of the area. The corporation he worked for called the metal box he labored in a storeroom. Standing for any length of time within the building was similar to baking in an oven.

Moisture rolled between his shoulder blades and across his back. He looked down the conveyor belt. The boxes gliding toward him appeared to be in a never-ending loop. The constant clicking of the metal rollers made him aware that packages were still being unloaded from the truck.
