Chapter 1
Hey,
Jamie said, realizing that he knew the video store clerk behind the counter.
Matthew looked up, and saw a familiar face in front of him, handing him a stack of blurays to rent. He hadn’t seen Jamie since he broke up with Stephanie. She and Jamie were best friends. That was three years ago…just before he had gotten this job at Video Wonderland. Hey, Jamie,
Matthew replied, How have you been?
Both men were now in their early twenties, and time had been very good to both of them. Jamie noticed how Matthew had a leaner, more muscular physique. He always thought Matthew was hot three years ago, but if it was possible, he was even hotter now. I’ve been good,
he answered.
Matthew had another clerk take over, so he could take a break and catch up with Jamie. Normally, he didn’t make a point to have friends or acquaintances that were gay, but Jamie was a very masculine guy that Matthew never felt uncomfortable around.
Once both men stepped outside and leaned against the wall, continuing the conversation seemed awkward. Neither one knew how to bring up Stephanie, so they just avoided mentioning her altogether. So, what have you been up to the last few years?
Matthew finally asked, breaking the awkward silence between them.
I moved out on my own,
Jamie started. When they had known each other before, Jamie and Stephanie were living together and working at the same gas station. The gas station where I was working, though, is closing.
I saw that.
Matthew had driven past it many times on the way to work, but always avoided going in, because he wasn’t sure if Stephanie still worked there. They didn’t have an especially messy break-up. It was almost mutual. But, Matthew felt it would be hard for them each to move on if they remained friends, so they just stopped talking. He always wondered if Stephanie blamed him for their break-up, or held any resentment over them not staying friends. On more than one occasion after the break-up, he was tempted to stop in the gas station and say, Hi.
It was better to let the wounds heal though. What are you going to do for work?
he asked Jamie.
I don’t know. I’m just depressed tonight, so I thought I’d have a movie night.
Jamie couldn’t help staring into Matthew’s eyes as he answered him. They were green with little flecks of golden grown mixed in. He could get lost in them for day, or even years, he though. He was already getting lost in them. He barely heard Matthew tell him that they were looking for someone at the video store to work nights. What?
Jamie asked, to make sure he heard Matthew correctly.
Matthew laughed, just thinking that Jamie was a little scatterbrained. I said,
he repeated, that I have to hire someone for nights here at the store, if you’re interested. It doesn’t pay great, but it is full time if you’re interested.
Yeah. For sure.
Jamie hadn’t rented from this store in years and had no idea that his friend’s ex-boyfriend worked there. He figured it was destiny that he ran into Matthew now.
Alright…well, come on back to my office and we’ll fill out some paperwork, and get you all set.
Matthew walked to the back of the store with Jamie in tow. Jamie tried not to, but couldn’t help staring at Matthew’s ass. The way his jeans sagged just enough to show the band of his underwear was driving Jamie crazy. He had to focus on something else, before he got too aroused.
After filling out the application, and all of the new hire paperwork, Jamie left the store feeling elated. Not only did he have a new job, and didn’t have to stress and worry about how he was going to pay his bills, but he also would get to work with Matthew on a regular basis. Even though he knew Matthew was straight, it still felt good to
