    We called it the elevator game. My friend Jennifer and I had conceived of it over too many drinks one night in the Cloudtop Lounge at the top of the Mears Tower. To understand the premise of the game, however, it’s first necessary to understand the Mears Tower and what’s at the top of it. The Mears Tower was by far the tallest skyscraper in the city, and at its top was a tourist-trap observation deck and, above that, the Cloudtop Lounge—an upscale club with almost terrifying panoramic views of the entire city.

    There were two ways to get to these top levels of the Tower. There was the usual bank of high speed elevators running up the center of the building. The skyscraper was tall enough that even these took a short while to speed their way to the top, and the elevation difference would make your ears pop about halfway up. For tourists or those simply not in a hurry, there was also a scenic elevator. This was a single large glass elevator that ran along one side of the tower. It was intentionally slow, as it gave breathtaking views of the city while it gradually crawled its way up toward the sky. Those prone to vertigo or afraid of heights avoided it for obvious reasons.
