    Of all the denizens of the heavenly realm Devaloka where the great god Indra dwelt and ruled, the nymphs called apsaras were the fairest beings, and Sundari was the most lovely among them. Above her supple waist her breasts swelled full and sweet as ripe fruits, while her soft haunches beckoned with tempting sway below. Night-black hair fell in a silken torrent to the dimples of her hips, its dark wealth making a wondrous contrast to skin as pure and fragrant as the petals of a newly-bloomed lotus. Her eyes glowed with fervent joy, and her radiant smile held the promise of all pleasures.

    She had been created as a living ornament to add even greater luster to Lord Indra's glowing palace of gold, where the high nobility of heaven reveled together at lavish feasts, their merriment enriched by the exquisite music of the court gandharvas. During those entertainments, Lord Indra would summon the apsaras to dance for his guests, and they would enter on light feet, the little bells on their anklets chiming as they whirled and wove in a maze of exquisite movement, forming endless intricate patterns of lovely forms and fluttering silks. All were girls in the luscious bloom of youth, divinely graceful; but Sundari surpassed them all. At Lord Indra's gesture the other nymphs would withdraw while Sundari performed alone, and the reveling throng fixed their full attention on her, in rapt enchantment.
