This chapter will provide information on:
Figuring out the worth of your time.
Managing interruptions.
Striking concise conversations.
Various tools for prioritization.
Costing your time
You should always have an idea of how much your time is worth. Start by working out how much your time costs, as this will help you decide whether you are spending your time profitably. If you’re working for an organization, you should calculate how much your time costs each year.
Calculating how much your time costs can help you to decide whether it is worth doing a job. If you notice that much of your time is spent doing low yield jobs, then perhaps consider employing an assistant.
Managing interruptions
You should learn to maintain focus and keep good control over your time.
Interruptions are a natural part of life but you should know how to manage them, as they can be a barrier in effectively managing your time.
Telephone calls, e-mails, conversations, chit chat with colleagues or urgent tasks dropped at your desk to be dealt with immediately all distract you from the task that you are supposed to be doing.
Your work time has limited hours and even the slightest interruption can rob you of the time required for you to achieve your goals and to work towards success.
Distractions also break your focus and you may end up spending more time trying to successfully complete your work.
You can control the disruptions to some extent by first identifying what they are and whether they are necessary. Next, you can plan for them in your daily schedule, so that you allot time to deal with all
