Chapter 1
The Beginning
It is said an unborn fetus is aware of its mother's surroundings. Some believe a baby is in fact a product of those surroundings. Sounds, colors, and incidents which are experienced by the mother, can affect the unborn child's development.

Sharon sat in her easy chair, waiting for Miles to come home. She was not sure how to tell him the news which she had been withholding from him. Miles had a thing about kids--he hated them. So how was he going to react when she told him she was pregnant, and three months along to say the least. It was too late to think about an abortion, maybe that was why she had waited so long. Besides, she wanted this child.
She picked up the remote control and scanned through the channels, stopping when she came to Conan O'Brien. This was not a good sign. Miles had left with his buddies. As late as it was already, her husband was bound to be sloppy drunk when he found his way home. If, in fact, he actually decided to come home.
Feeling the urge to snack on something, Sharon rose from her chair and went to the kitchen. She found half of a box of Wheat Thins, and the remains of a Cheese Whiz bottle. Going to the refrigerator, she retrieved the jug of milk. She got out a glass from the cupboard and filled it with milk, and then returned the milk to its shelf in the fridge.
Going back to the front room, Sharon saw a pair of headlights pull into the driveway. Fear's indifferent hand seized her throat. If she had not missed that single pill three months ago, she would not be in this predicament with her pregnancy now.
She was going to have to stand up to Miles. She had done it before, although she had ended up in the hospital pretty broken up. Clenching her hands, she realized he had the right to know. Moreover, if she did not tell him soon, he would find out easily enough just by looking at her.
Miles stumbled through the front door, his clothes stank of the bourbon he had been drinking all night. He walked past Sharon without even glancing at or speaking to her. From the kitchen she heard his strangled speech.
Why isn't there any beer in the fridge. You know you're supposed to keep it stocked.
Miles walked into the front room where Sharon was and continued speaking. How many times do I have to tell you, I want beer in the fridge at all times. Can't you even do that?
When Sharon did not speak, Miles knocked the glass of milk out of her hand and the glass shattered on the end table.
Now look what you've done woman. Get something and clean that up.
Already fearing the beating that might be coming, Sharon rushed into the kitchen and returned with a rag. As she bent over to soak up the spilled milk, Miles kicked her. Knocked off balance, Sharon flew head first into the end table. Her hand came down upon the shattered glass and she cried out in pain as a shard of it sunk into the palm of her hand.
Maybe from now on you will be more careful.
Miles mocked as he left the room.
Wrapping the milk soaked rag around her hand, she finished cleaning up the mess. In the kitchen, she removed the rag from her hand and wrung it out. Her hand was bleeding heavily as she got a fresh rag out and tied it around her palm. Getting an empty sack, she returned to the front room and picked up the pieces of glass. She heard Miles belching from upstairs. She could not tell him tonight; if he heard the news in this condition, he would kill her.

Luckily, Miles had fallen asleep before Sharon made it upstairs. She was making him breakfast when he staggered down the stairs to the kitchen. The bacon sizzled in the frying pan as Miles groped through the cupboard looking for the aspirin. Satisfied when he had found it, he emptied out a handful of the pale tablets and washed them down with a glass of water.
Looking around, Miles realized that his woman was making breakfast for him.
I don't want anything to eat. You will have to eat all of that yourself.
He muttered while he gathered his things to leave for the day.
Sharon turned around to face him and tried to speak in the kindest voice she could muster. Could we at least sit down for a minute, I need to talk to you.
Sharon calmly exclaimed.
If it's about last night I...
Miles began.
No, last night was my own fault.
Sharon interrupted. It's a little more important. I would just like to let you in on it.
Make it quick, me and the boys are going up in the hills in Jim's new Jeep.
The impatience was growing in Miles' voice, and he was ready to leave. He hated it when she delayed him with her useless chatter.
This was about the best chance she would have. Besides, she could not back out now. If she did, he was likely to beat her even worse than last night for wasting his time. Sharon turned the stove off and went to sit at the table by her husband.
Miles, you are going to be a daddy. I've been waiting for the right time to tell you. I'm three months pregnant.
Sharon saw the red flushing Miles' face as she finished her sentence.
The look on Miles' face was serious, but it had not changed since he sat down. He was grinding his teeth. Standing up, he walked over to the sink without a word. Finally, he turned back around and faced Sharon, the rage was building in his eyes.
We will talk about this later, I don't want to be late meeting the guys. Just be sure you are here when I get home.
Miles walked out the front door. Outside, his Chevy
