About this ebook

Centavo is a dog, born on streets in a small fishing village in Baja, Mexico. One day she is adopted by a couple from Flagstaff, Arizona and taken back to the states to live. The story is from the perspective of Centavo as she goes through all the adjustments in order to be a pet living in a nice home in the U.S.

Centavo has her name changed to Penny and she has to make adjustments to living with a cat and another dog who speaks no Spanish. Jackson, the border collie and Zoe learn to adapt to Penny as well.

After being gone for two years the family decides to go back to the fishing village where Penny was found. Penny has not seen any of her friends or family for all that time and she is a little worried as to their safety.

When they arrive in Mexico, there are no street dogs on the street. Where have all the dogs gone? She finally comes across Pero, the dog she believes is her father. He tells Penny about all the changes in the town. Her mother has died and her brothers all have homes now. Many gringos have adopted the street dogs and have given them homes.

After returning to the states Penny was happy because she knows all her family is safe. She has a dream from her mother and finds out she is in a better place. Penny has made the adjustments living in the States and is now content to being Penny, A Dog From Mexico.

The book is also a memorial to Steve Forman, a man who came to San Felipe and started ZAPP, an organization which help to spay and neuter animals and find homes for strays. He died in 2011 and the group called Viva has taken over the duties of ZAPP. Part of the profits of this book go to helping with the clinic in San Felipe. Any other spay and neuter clinic who also takes part in purchasing this book can also receive a part of the profits for their organization.

Jeffrey Crimmel’s children’s book, Centavo is based on a true story of a little puppy growing up on the beaches of San Felipe, Mexico. Generations of this dogs’ family wandered the beach eating scraps and learning to survive, until a tourist’s family adopted her. They bring her back to the United States to live with them, and introduce her to their other pets. The author wrote Centavo to bring to light the need for animal rescue and spay/neuter programs in poor countries. He was inspired by Steve Forman, who helped spearhead San Felipe Animal Rescue (SFAR) along with a woman from Phoenix, Arizona. Steve then went on to found another clinic in Mexico, and helped with fund raising until his death in 2011. Through Steve’s efforts, the dogs on this beach have been adopted and the majority spayed or neutered. Jeffrey also wrote this book to help in the fund raising aspect of a newly formed program merged out of the 2 Steve put together. I read this little gem on Kindle. It’s a good story, great lesson and has photos of Centavo and other dogs mentioned in the book. 5 stars, all ages…
