    Dragged Into Darkness

The sunlights differ, but there is only one darkness.

    Ursula K. Le Guin

SLAM! No Frankie, please no more… SLAM! You’re going to kill me…

    SLAM!

The final blow that shut me up and put me out. That will teach me not to talk back. He only hits me when I deserve it…

It wasn’t always like that between Frankie and me. I was a good Catholic girl from Queens and Frankie was a dreamboat of a guy I met in high school. Thick black hair and a comb in his pocket, he was every girl’s dream guy. But I got him. Lucky me.

Frankie Morelli was a tough guy from a rough neighborhood and rougher home life. His father Joseph was a drunken brute who took out his problems on his mother’s face and died in a barroom brawl when Frankie was 15.

His mother Athena, an immigrant from Greece, fled back to her mother’s homeland where she died an old woman surrounded by women dressed in black.

I was the daughter of Mario and Rosetta Puglesi. Two dirt-poor factory workers working their life away for a better life for me and my brother Joey. But it never happened.

My father died at 50 of a heart attack and Ma crawled into her already tiny shell and retired an old lady. Broke and broken, she had no one at the end and she died an unhappy woman. She had me, but never knew it.

I met Frankie in the 9th grade. He was looking for a backseat Betty and I was looking for a good Catholic boy to take me home to his mother.

His mother instantly disliked me. She spoke very little English but I knew when I was being disapproved of. The woman simply hated me. Why, who knows except that I was a decent girl who was trying to steal her baby and I did.

We got married at 17 and thought the world would just open up for us and make things happen. It didn’t. Frankie got a job at the local gas station and I waited tables down at Anthony’s Pizzeria.

I hated every filthy minute of it but I was destined to show my husband that I was a woman who could carry her weight in this world. But I was only 17 and 95 pounds soaking wet and I could barely carry the heavy trays of food let alone the weight of the world.

I was 18 and found out I was pregnant. Frankie was not pleased. A baby will cost too much money, too much this and too much that. I miscarried after 4 months and that was that.

He started drinking after work and coming in late and then later. He hooked up with a bunch of men at the station who thought they could teach him how to be a man.

A man does his own thinking, a man pushes his wife around, and a man beats her to
