About this ebook

Aaron Tate moved from the city to a little town called Blue Lake. He doesn't like it there, but being 11 years old, he didn't have a choice. There is something wrong about the new house. Maybe it's the town, maybe it's the people, or maybe it's the swamp behind the backyard that's creeping Aaron out.

    Chapter 1

    Moving In

The Tate family turned the corner on Tippecanoe Ave.

Babe, look at it. It looks better than when we first saw it three weeks ago. Our dream home babe, just look at it, Richard said, he drove slowly through the street.

Mary smiled, pointing to the house on the hill, their new house on the hill, Look Aaron, you could learn all about the different trees. There’s got to be a thousand of them stretching out across the land like a forest.

Richard turned in the steep driveway. He had to gun the engine for the climb until the car settled on a flat surface, Babe, they’re just to separate the lot from the main street. I’d hardly call it a forest. I’d consider it a small woods.

She patted Aaron on the shoulder, Well they look thick enough to be a forest to me. Aaron could get lost in such a place.

Now that’s absurd. Our boy is a top-notch survivalist, he’s got a built-in compass in ‘im just like his dad, he looked back at Aaron and gave him a wink. Aaron gave a quick smile then went back to his gloomy expression.

The moving truck turned the corner and was creeping along until it reached the bottom of the driveway before it backed up. The eight degree incline forced everything in the truck to slide up front.

Aaron watched his mother’s face turn from smiles to worry as they heard items crashing, and most likely, breaking. His dad hadn’t noticed as he turned off the car and gleamed at the new house.

It’s a wonderful house, Richard exclaimed.

Aaron didn’t much care for the place, but he didn’t have a choice being eleven. He sighed and was more concerned his friends were now five towns away, a long way to go for a kid with only a bike for transportation. He got out of the car and walk to one of the two trees planted at the flattest surface of the yard.

Dad, you think I could spend the night at Steve’s? Aaron asked. He hoped one of them would drive him back to Akron where his life was.

Richard gave him a half-smile, Aaron, give the new place a chance would ya?

Aaron scuffed the grass with his sneakers. His dad gave him a warning expression, the don’t-push-your-buttons expression. Can he come here?

Sure he can. When we get settled, like in a couple of weeks, Richard walked out to him. Mary watched with a horrific look as the moving truck tried to back up the driveway again.

Aaron frowned, I hate it here, got no friends.

Richard gave Aaron a one arm hug, You’ll make new friends. With a yard as big as this, it would be impossible not to make friends. You could start-up a quick game of football like that, he snapped his fingers.

Aaron couldn’t see himself staring up a game being less than a hundred pounds. He saw himself catching the ball and then flattened by some kid who hated losing. He shivered and thought of something else to complain about. Dad the house doesn’t even have an upstairs like our old one.

Richard answered with a grin, Our old house was small. This house is a ranch-style, doesn’t have an upstairs no, but it has a huge basement with lots of possibilities. In fact there’s a big space just for a family room with a bar, and that’s only half of it. You’ll see. You could have your own play room bigger then the old house’s front yard. I’m telling you, give it a try champ, you’ll see.

Mary barked orders as the movers
