    *****

Eileen and her brother Michael were orphaned as teenagers. Their parents were killed by a drunk driver, who was speeding and did not see the other car until it was too late. The crash was devastating to the teens. The two teenagers did not have any family living, except a grandmother on their mother’s side of the family. The teens remember infrequently visiting their grandmother. Mother told them that grandmother was a widow, her husband their grandfather died of heartache, years ago.

Eileen remembers as toddlers one time of traveling through mother’s home town and they stop to visit her grandmother. When they pulled up in front of the home they observed a tall striking woman staring at the car. She was tall and bony, had small glistening eyes, a pinched face, and tight lips, and was dressed in all black. She was holding a small black book, decorated with golden edges. She looks directly at them, appearing to be looking through them. They all hesitantly walked on to the porch. Standing in front of her; she looked at the children spoke to them in a quiet controlled, strict tone of voice stating to the mother,

The children look like their father. she replied with a sarcastic tone of voice.

Grandmother was thinking to herself; she knew that the marriage would not last. He was unmotivated and lazy, did not want the responsibility of being a father. She displayed a frown, and Misty realized she was thinking about her ex-husband and never liked him.

The children watched as their mother came to his defense, stating that he had a hard childhood and wounds to work through.

They are still speaking to each other and staying in touch for the sake of the children.

The grandmother with a wave of her hand shooed the family into the house. She did not want the noisy neighbors asking questions. Eileen thought the weeklong visit was like living in a morgue. The house was filled with silence, not much talking, and mono-word answers between grandmother and their mother. The children were told to only speak to an adult when they were spoken to, otherwise be quiet.

One rainy day when grandmother complained of a migraine and went to her bedroom to rest for a while, the children were restless and decided to sneak up to the attic. They quietly opened the door and climbed up the stairs. There were cobwebs and everything was dusty. Eileen and Michael decided to scout around the large rooms and opened a door leading to a hidden staircase. Slowly, they crept up the stairs, trying to not make noises and to wake up their grandmother.

As the came to a second level, they were surprised by a black cat that came darting towards them; Michael stumbled back in fright, falling into a large cedar chest. Eileen ran over to where Michael fell and stop in her tracks when she saw the chest he had fallen upon. It was old and very dusty, but something under the grime attracts her attention.

She grabs a cloth out of one of the boxes and starts to dust it off. The box seemed to be made of pure pine cedar; it had strange symbols etched on it, pictures of crosses from different religions, a crest of some royalty, a symbol of an unknown origin. The children got down on their knees and tried opening the cedar chest. Saw it was closed tight by a padlock. Michael intuitionally spread his hands out and felt around the box and located a notch.

He pushed the notch like a button and one of the crosses popped out. Eileen looked at it, they both decided it was the key and put it into the padlock lock-hole. Turning slowly, they heard the lock pop open. Michael removed the lock and both slowly opened the chest.

Raising the lid, they saw that there was a very thick red velvet cloth covering the items in the cedar chest. Pulling it back, it uncovered golden items, Michael pulled one out, and it looked like a chalice made of gold. He found another item; it was a crown, lined with gems. He went deeper into the cedar chest and unwrapped a long stick, it look like a staff, shaped like a long serpent. Everything appeared old, but in mint condition.

Eileen thought the crown was beautiful. She went to placed it on her head, again Michael institutively told her to stop, because it was wrong. Eileen asked,

    Why?

Michael told her it was wrong and he cannot explain it. Eileen placed the crown back in its place in the cedar chest. There was another layer of red velvet cloth to uncover more treasures. The children were about to pull it back when they felt a dark shadow fall over them. Michael looked up. Their grandmother was staring at them. On her face, was a furious mask of anger, her eyes were like little slits and her breathing was raspy. She was reaching out her arm to snatch them up off the floor.

They ducked from her reach and ran down the stairs to the main room in the house for they heard their mother coming back from town and ran straight into her arms.

Grandmother raced down the stairs, demanding that her ungrateful daughter with her spoiled children leave her home immediately and to never return. The mother looked at the children in shock, looked at her mother, raised her hands to the sky and said, What now? We have no place to go. We are waiting for the apartment tenants to move on.

Grandmother told her she did not care,

There is the door, you and her rotten children, get out now, she screamed.

The mother sighed and went upstairs to pack. The children followed behind and silently helped her with packing. They loaded everything into the station wagon and looked up to see their angry grandmother watching from the second floor bedroom window.

The car ride was long for silence filled every crevice, and no one was willing to talk. Mother was in shock and the children felt guilty for putting their mother in this position.

    *******

Present: Now ten years later, Michael and Eileen were passengers in a Department of Families and Children’s State car, being driven to this grandmother’s house As orphans there were no family members to take them except grandmother, she over the phone, grudging agreed to accept the children on a temporary basis until a permanent foster home could be located.

The memories Eileen had of her past experiences with this grandmother made her very anxious about seeing her again. But if grandmother did accept them, they could not be divided, living with the fear of being separated from each other. Michael did not care about anything; he shut down and was emotionally distance. He was thinking that he was not afraid of this grandmother, who is probably an old lady now. If she messed with him or Eileen, he would inform her she could not. He did not want to be separated from his only family, his sister, so he agreed reluctantly to live temporary with this relative.

The State car stopped in front of the familiar Victorian dwelling; the curtains were all closed and the house looked like it was in disarray, as if no one did any repairs to it for a while. The caseworker shoed the children out, and pulled their two suitcases out of the trunk. Gave each one, a suitcase, handled them an envelope, and told them to call her if they had any problems.

The grandmother came out of the house; she looked the same, except that she had aged ten years and has a slight hump on her back. She was staring with her eyes and slowly walking down the walkway. The children looked at the caseworker, and then at the grandmother.

The caseworker was getting back into the car. The children resigned to the reality that they would be living with this strange lady for a while, as mother requested in her last will and testament. They watched her coming down the walk way, she looked like she did the first time they saw her as young children. She stood there, prim and proper, dressed in her black dress, holding the little black book, staring through them and waving her hands, shushing them into the house.

Grandmother in a low tone of voice, grumbled,

"Go upstairs, to the two bedrooms. Eileen will stay in the
