The Case

As I rode the bus, I reviewed the case in my head. The case of Nadia Belova. By no means hopeless, by no means easy. But Child Welfare doesn’t get easy cases. It had many aspects, but I had refined it all down to the following summary:

Nadia Belova, age 7, was an otherwise normal girl with a grotesque case of epilepsy. Many days she had to be heavily sedated or suffer violent, multiple seizures. So far no cure was forthcoming, but one of her doctors would be attending this afternoon's meeting, so maybe there would be good news. I doubted it though. In my experience doctors conjure as many miracles as everybody else, which is to say circa none. That was the medical aspect.
