The practice of Vodou (Voodoo, Voodoun) includes elements that may be considered unacceptable or inappropriate by modern Western parents. Indeed, certain modern American parents (like the editor) have cringed while reading this work.
The use of tobacco, alcohol (like rum), and ecstatic dancing are facts of the Vodou experience. These practices originated in an earlier time, among people who were not bound in Victorian ideals, and to whom these practices were the meat-and-potatoes of their spiritual life.
