Iknow it doesn’t feel like it right now, but there is life after divorce." I (John) was having lunch with Michele, a friend of mine who I had known for a long time. She was an attractive, smart woman in her mid-thirties. And she had recently been divorced by her husband, Sean. The breakup had been pretty messy, and she’d been devastated by it all. That’s why she had asked me to lunch, to begin to pick up the pieces of her life.
No, it doesn’t feel like it. I don’t know where to start,
Michele said. I mean, I’m having to deal with being really, really hurt, plus figuring out what the single life is about, plus dealing with the kids—and all at one time. It is just overwhelming. How do I handle all this?
I totally agreed with her. Divorce is one of the most painful experiences a person can undergo. It literally tears your life in two, at many levels. You began as a couple with intimacy, passion, desire, and all your dreams. And for whatever reason, the person you were invested in most deeply doesn’t want you anymore. It is a brutal thing.
I told my friend, Well, you are right. Honestly, it is going to be tough for a while, and there is no way around it. But I can tell you the one thing I would do that would go a long way toward helping you get through all this.
