Frances J. Roberts

FRANCES J. ROBERTS (1918–2009) is best known for her classic devotional Come Away My Beloved. She founded The King's Press in 1964, where she authored and published Come Away and eight other books, selling over 1.5 million copies in 30 years. After graduating from Moody Bible Institute in 1938, Roberts served as Florida’s state director for Child Evangelism Fellowship, writing the popular “Wordless Book Song” during her tenure there. An accomplished musician with eighty-eight published hymns, Roberts also taught at a Spanish mission school and worked as a professional accompanist, performing at various churches.

SERENITY and VITALITY

Beside the still waters, let our souls find refreshing. In quiet meditation let our minds be renewed. For out of much concourse in the world, there comes a fatigue of body which sleep alone cannot relieve. Out of solitude is born serenity, and out of serenity is born the vitality to meet the demands of life in every area of experience.

The life of God is imparted to man as he worships. Nothing so unfits the soul for the stresses of life as neglecting this solemn and joyous occupation. To be fully occupied with God the first hour of the day energizes the life forces and creates the capacity to meet the emergencies of any day, however trying.

Many a crisis loses its force when met by one who has gained poise and inner calm at the outset of the day.

The Psalmist, David, called the Lord his SHEPHERD because he had learned the secret of following. No path is too rugged if He has gone before. No place is desolate in His company. And we so journey … not in self-sufficiency and worldly wisdom, but in the way He leads: Thus shall we be assured that we will not lose our way, and we shall have the added comfort of never having to walk alone.

Blessed Shepherd, guard and keep us.

Let Thy wisdom be our guide.

By the pools of grace and patience

Let us evermore abide.

We adore Thee, blessed Saviour;

Never let us turn from Thee.

Discipline our souls in kindness,

Tune our hearts to worship Thee.

ORIENTATION of SOUL

It is not by the energy of the flesh that you enter into the kingdom. It is by much endurance in testing and tribulations that I teach and guide you into new paths.

My heart is a sanctuary, and as you pray, I would bring you into oneness with Me in worship. This is a holy place, and sin must be purged away before you can enter with joy. Do not attempt to enter this place before you have humbled yourself and laid aside all self-esteem and self-seeking.

I have much work to be done, but I cannot use any vessel that is not fully surrendered to Me in total dedication. Your orientation of soul must be centered in Me. If you
