    Introduction

    When most people think about Gibraltar, the images that come to mind are of the Rock itself, the Barbary apes, and quaint British customs. While these things are all an integral part of the Crown Colony, they are only a small portion of what makes up the wonders of Gibraltar.

    It has a uniquely strategic location at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, linked to mainland Europe by a narrow isthmus and overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar and North Africa. It is rather small, just 2.3 sq miles (6 sq kms) but rises to an impressive 1,398 ft (426 m) above sea level.

    The ever-so-prominent Rock is, geologically speaking, anomalous to its immediate surroundings.

    The fact that it is formed of limestone which is, in simplest terms, a compaction of small fossils, indicates that at one time The Rock was a seabed. It is also known that the geological formations in this area have altered many, many times. One such change, caused
