During the heyday of the British Empire, Australia was a notorious penal colony. Between 1788 and 1868 more than 162,000 people convicted of a variety of crimes were sentenced to transportation to be used as slave labour. From 1833 to 1877 many of them would have been sent to Port Arthur in Tasmania. This was an infamous and cruel prison complex where inmates were put to work in the production of ships, steel, bricks and a variety of other items.
