Gibraltar’s 1953 definitives

Way back in 1968 I decided to pay a visit to Gibraltar but it turned out to be far from easy. At the time the Spanish government had hinted that it would close the land border with the tiny British colony obviously wanting London to return the rock to Spain. The only way of reaching Gibraltar from Spanish soil was by ferry from the town of Algeciras on the other side of the bay.

I remember spending a sunny day visiting most of the sights. I of course climbed the rock in order to get a view of the town and the surrounding area and I also had an encounter with Gibraltar’s famous monkeys, the only monkey population in Europe; according to the latest figures it amounts to 230 specimens.

Despite Spain’s demands for a return of the territory, a state of ‘status quo’ has remained. Today the border is of course open to all and
