New York Shape Shifter - Scott William Pattison

    understand?

Brad opened the front door of his apartment and headed down his stairs to his motorcycle. It was a brightly lit sunny New York morning and he was excited to go for a ride. He had brand new motorcycle tires and was ready to test them out. Brad put on his helmet, started up his sport bike and gave his fresh rear tire a good shredding on the pavement outside his apartment. He gave it the gas twisting the throttle and took off down the road. Brad had the day off from work and was going to meet a friend at the local café. Nothing was better than a morning ride to go along with a cup of Joe, except maybe an extra shot of espresso. It’s not like he didn’t get his adrenaline going already from the bike ride, but he liked the taste of coffee in the morning. Brad took the route that had the most curves. He loved to push his bike and himself to the limits around the curves. Brad lived in a small upstate New York town that was a nice rural area. There were some businesses but also some wooded areas. He enjoyed living in the small town outside of the city. The city had too much traffic, was too crowded, and was not good for motorcycle rides. Brad enjoyed the view of nature and being outside on his bike ride to town. He even had to watch for cow crossings on a few streets as he passed a farm or two on his short trip. It wasn’t long and Brad had arrived at the local café. He parked his bike took off his helmet and strolled over to the entrance.

His buddy Jeff was already waiting and having his coffee at a table outside. Brad joined Jeff and ordered his usual, opting out of the extra shot of espresso this time.

Brad: So Jeff what’s new? How was the party last night?

Jeff: Well, you sure you want to know?

Brad: What do you mean? Really, what’s up?

Jeff: The party went ok. But something really weird happened and I feel kind of strange talking about it.

Brad: What happened, did you eat too many tacos again and get the runs again?

Jeff: Real funny. But I am serious. The party was a lot of fun, and the guys had the four wheelers out and a great big bonfire going. All was going well until the end of the night.

Brad: So what happened at the end of the night? Don’t keep me hanging, would you just tell me already?

Jeff: We were all sitting around the bonfire and talking. The fire was on the edge of the woods next to Sam’s house. I had to go to the bathroom, you know a number one. So I went over to the tall grass next to the edge of the woods.

Brad: Yah, so what happened next?

Jeff: As I was going to the bathroom I was looking out into the woods. The light from the bonfire was flickering and giving me just enough light to see what I was doing, but the woods were extremely dark and hard to see too far in past the trees. Just as I was finishing up and ready to go back to the fire with the guys I noticed what looked like eye shine about twenty to thirty feet into the woods. There was a small clearing and the eyes were up a little taller than I am. It looked like something was standing there on two feet looking right at me.

Brad: Holy crap! You got to be kidding me! That is freaky.

Jeff: You’re telling me. It took all my strength to break free of whatever that was staring at me and go back to the fire. I was so scared I went back and sat down with the guys and did not say anything to them about what had just happened.

Brad: What? Why not? You should have told the guys and went into the woods and searched that thing out.

Jeff: You don’t understand. The way that thing was looking at me I could not tell if it was human or an animal. It was looking right through me. I felt small and out of place like I should not have seen it or that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Brad: Wow, you really sound like you’re spooked out. Do you want to go back there and see if we can find any evidence that there was something there? I wish I did not have to work last night and I could have been there, maybe I would have seen it too.

Jeff: I am not sure, let me think about it and get back to you. I don’t think you would feel the same way if you had been there and witnessed it too. I am late for class anyway now and I’ve got to get going.

Brad: Ok, call me after your class and we’ll arrange to go over to Sam’s house.

Jeff: Ok, talk to you later.

Jeff set down his coffee cup and got on his motorcycle and tore out of there. Brad stayed at the café to finish his coffee and think about what his friend had just told him. Brad had the entire day off and wanted to relax and enjoy himself. But with the news Jeff just gave him he could not just sit around without trying to figure out what Jeff witnessed staring at him last night. Brad had a feeling that Jeff was going to avoid him and not want to talk about what happened for a while. He felt like he had to dig deeper and figure out what was going on. Brad got out his cell phone and called Sam. Sam did not pick up, so Brad left him a message to call him as soon as he could. The coffee was getting cold, so Brad gulped down what was left, grabbed his helmet and mounted the sport bike. He left and decided to take a ride over to Sam’s house. Sam lived on the outskirts of town in an area that was heavily wooded. Sam loved the area because he could have gatherings and parties and not worry about disturbing any neighbors. Sam’s nearest neighbor was about a mile away from his house. Sam was outside mowing his lawn when Brad pulled in on his bike. Brad got off his motorcycle, took off his helmet and walked over by the garage door and sat on a picnic table set up between the house and the garage. Sam finished his mowing and parked the lawn mower. He finally noticed Brad was there and walked over.

Brad: Hi, Sam how are you today?

Sam: Fine, what’s up? You missed the party last night. Did you have to work?

Brad: I needed to talk to you about what Jeff saw in the woods last night. And yes I had to work, sorry I missed the party.

    Sam: What did Jeff see?

Brad: Well, sit down so we can talk. It’s kind of weird.

    Sam: Ok, so what’s up?

Brad: I just finished having coffee with Jeff earlier, and he said you guys were all sitting around the bonfire and he went to the edge of the woods to go to the bathroom. He said he saw not too far into the woods an eye shine.

Sam: Oh, is that it? It could have been a deer or an owl. We have both animals in our woods.

Brad: No, I don’t think it was either a deer or an owl. The way Jeff was acting and talking, he had seen something a little taller than him standing on two feet staring at him. It really freaked him out.

Sam: You’re starting to freak me out too. Hey man, I have to live out here. So what are you saying?

Brad: What I am saying is that Jeff
