‘AN OLD FRIEND’
I was woken up by the loud and thunderous vibrations coming from my phone, which was laid flat on my floor next to my bed, at least that’s where I’d last left it. Aggressively I dived through the pile of rank clothes, still half asleep. Hoping I’d remember which pocket my phone was in, like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It didn’t help with my curtains being closed but I was always hesitant to who was watching me from behind the Motels glass.
Eventually my phone fell from my ripped jeans as I flung them across my room. The number wasn’t recognizable but out of curiosity I answered.
Hello?
I yelped under my breath.
A shallow voice responded, Hi is this, Alex?
.
Who’s this?
I had a rough idea of who it could be.
The calm voice replied Its Fred, Fred Billingsworth. I was partners with your dad, Matthew at Ally’s Attraction?
Suddenly a slow chill came running down my spine, it felt like I’d just been caught out on something, but I didn’t know what. I wanted to put the phone down after hearing my father’s name mentioned.
Image%201%20(Portrait).jpgWhen I was brought back to my harmful childhood, my life just flashed right in front of me. I was brought back with an Alex?
From Fred. I confirmed that I was still there, and it was me.
Fred quickly Spoke Look I know you and Matthew had a tough running. But the main reason I called is to give you an opportunity to work for a growing business
.
My heart stopped in excitement, I’ve always wanted to work, especially with Fred. But the only thing that was stopping me was that it was my dad’s business.
Fred kept it short and simple (thankfully) and offered to meet at the local café if I was interested.
I was careful with my reply might do
.
Not showing any emotion, but my head was going through the roof with memories and thoughts. It was like meeting a girl for the first time or wondering what I got on a test I’d studied hard on. The phone fell silent as I hung up. I saw Fred as more of an uncle or a friend who supported me, somebody I could trust. I didn’t have many friends growing up. I felt very excited to see Fred again but cautious. My dad was never the nicest man especially after my mom moved away, well from what I’ve been told. I used to think, ‘what are those harsh red and black marks stretching across moms’ neck and arms?’ I now understand that what Father did to mom was the same as what he would do to me. If only I could meet mother again. Move across the world together and hear her whisper in my ear once again ‘I love you my little man’...
‘Could this be a turning Point for me?’ I asked myself repeatedly. I looked around my petit apartment seeing my life just wasting away. Among the empty pizza boxes and the cracked walls, I knew I was on the verge of losing it all, but never wanted to admit it. On my calendar displayed on the fridge the day was nearly heard to pay rent that I couldn’t afford. The last of my belongings was sold to pay last month. Nowhere else was recruiting for jobs so I just improvised as I always do. It was best to go, so I put my grey and musty hoody on and went. I knew I didn’t look apart but it’s not like Fred doesn’t know me. I felt nervous like meeting an old friend, well it was. For some reason I cared about what he would think. Like I felt the need to impress him.
Later that day I managed to reach the café but very hesitant of my surroundings. I don’t go out much, but it was close by. I entered the café Labelled ‘Jo’s Dine Inn’ and saw this familiar figure, sat in the corner on his own wearing a red polo shirt underneath a navy waste coat. Which is what I liked, out of the way in the corner, not having other people hearing our conversations.
However, I felt quite intimidated compared to this big built character. I creeped up to him and ever so suddenly he swiveled around on the cracked oak chair with a welcoming smile. My heart dropped as he came to hug me, I usually don’t accept hugs, but this felt special. His fresh mint aftershave welcomed me back when I was 8 and he would come around for the regular coffee breaks. Dad always thought it was because he wanted to see mom. Fred stepped back to say, Look at you, all grown up!
I was still in shock, but I was at a
