The sun was coming up, and I was awake before my alarm even rang. It wasn’t out of excitement for the new day, but because the dullness in my life had transferred to my sleep, making it impossible for me to dream.

In the past, dreams had been all I had to survive the week. They were the place where I could live in a parallel universe created by my own imagination. I dreamt of the basic needs of our human existence: I dreamt of love. The passion I felt while sleeping was incomparable to any feeling I had ever experienced in real life. Every morning, before I got dressed in my blazer, skirt, and high-heeled shoes, I contemplated my life and always reached the same conclusion. I despise it, but I cannot change my situation.

When it came to me, looking in the eyes of the opposing lawyer and their client brought a stabbing pain to my heart and sometimes tears to my eyes, especially if I knew that my client was in the wrong. Whenever I won those appalling cases, I would be devastated, while my father’s joy could be heard from the tenth floor.

Ross was stronger and more courageous than me. He stood up for what he loved and decided to pursue a career in hockey. Even though it had come as a shock to my parents,
