About this audiobook

PROTECT THE RICH. SERVE THE FAMOUS. HUNT THE GUILTY.

NYPD Red is the elite, highly trained task force assigned to protect the rich, the famous, and the connected. And Detective Zach Jordan and his partner Kylie MacDonald-the woman who broke his heart at the police academy-are the best of the best, brilliant and tireless investigators who will stop at nothing to deliver justice.

Zach and Kylie's New Year's celebrations are cut short when they're called to the home of billionaire businessman Hunter Alden, Jr. after he makes a grisly discovery in his townhouse garage. When Alden's teenage son goes missing soon afterwards, and his father seems oddly reluctant to find him, Zach and Kylie find themselves in the middle of a chilling conspiracy that threatens everyone in its wake-especially their city's most powerful citizens. NYPD Red 3 is the next sensational novel in James Patterson's explosive new series, a thriller that goes behind the closed doors of New York high society and into the depths of depravity.

It is an okay read not the best thriller on the market but if you are trying to pass the time it will do. That is about as exciting as got for me.

New York’s best detective duo are called out to the murder of a chauffer which is not their usual call when you are there to protect the rich and wealthy from themselves and others. They find the car is owned by Hunter Alden Jr a billionaire and a supporter of the mayor. As they begin their investigation, they realise they are being lied to at every turn (quelle surprise). But then they are used to that. They know that Hunter Alden III is missing may be kidnapped but they cannot do anything unless he is reported missing. As the case progresses things do not go quite as planned and having lots of money just means they can hide their secrets better than others.

    An okay read.

Very entertaining and easy read (short chapters) as cop partners Kylie and Zach investigate the murder of millionaire Hunter Alden's chauffeur and apparent kidnap of Alden's son Trip. Good repartee between the cop partners and sometime lovers as they travel around New York landmarks.

This is the third in the NYPD sereis and it was as good as the first in my opinion. The main characters in the series are Detective Zach Jordan and his partner (and one-time love interest) Kylie MacDonald, who are part of the elite task force that is charged with protecting the rich and famous in New York City.

Hunter Alden's chauffeur is murdered and decapitated. His head is delivered to Alden in his son, Tripp's camera case with a cryptic message. Whatever the message means, Alden does not want anyone to know, and that includes keeping the head hidden and his son's disappearance a secret. Zach and Kylie, however, aren't buying it, and the chase is on to find out what happened to Tripp without upsetting the family or getting the Mayor on their case.

Throughout it all, Zach has to juggle his feelings for Kylie, who's married to a drug addict who keeps backsliding, and Cheryl, a psychologist who is now his love interest. There is usually some romantic interest in his books, this one is a little of a love triangle.

There are lots of twists and turns (both right and wrong), and one that was very surprising. I usually do not get taken by surprise but it happened here. The ending was a best for all conclusion, but it did not make a lot of people happy. In fact, the premise of what Hunter Alden is keeping secret is actually rather disgusting and I was even surprised that James Patterson would come up with it at all. All in all, another good read. Keep 'em coming!

Another fast paced, quick read by James Patterson and Marshall Karp. Enjoyable with twists and turns. Of course, a lot of quick wit by the main character.

This book was fun, fast paced, short chapters, full of twists and turns. It is a very light read with a bit of mystery. Even though this is not one of my favorite Patterson books, I enjoyed the read and would read more in this series. i give it a 3 star.

NYPD red 3, James Patterson, Marshall Karp, authors; Edoardo Ballerini, narrator

There are three generations of very wealthy Hunter Aldens living in Manhattan. They are just the right kind of family to come under the purview of NYPD Red, a specially trained unit of the police force that specializes in protecting and serving the needs of the wealthiest and best connected families; they are the rich, the famous and very often, those that are most likely to get away with stretching the law to its limits. Hunter Alden is the son of Hutch Alden and Tripp Alden is the son of Hunter. Their fortune comes from Wall Street which doesn’t make them win friends, but surely helps them influence people.

When a headless body turns up that turns out to be Peter, Hunter Alden’s, long time, Haitian driver, who had been on his way to meet the youngest Alden, a criminal investigation ensues which takes the reader on a merry-go-round search for the murderer and the missing head. Although an older, somewhat addle-brained woman has reported a terrorist event which might indicate the possibility that Tripp Alden was abducted with his friend Lonnie, in conjunction with Peter’s murder, she is not a very credible witness and is not believed. Couple her account with Hunter Alden’s insistence that his son was not kidnapped, since he had texted him explaining why he wasn’t home, and it becomes obvious that the police force has their hands tied behind their backs. No investigation into a possible kidnapping can begin alongside the murder investigation because there is no actual proof that it has even occurred.

The merry chase twists and turns steadily until the murder mystery is solved. The investigators are Zach Jordan and his partner Kylie MacDonald, a woman he was involved with romantically a decade before. They follow every lead but come up against road blocks involving pull, protocol and evidence. They cannot seem to prove their theory about Tripp’s kidnapping, but they are pretty positive that the elderly woman who reported the crime got part of it right. She did not see a terrorist attack, she saw two young men being kidnapped by a man dressed in black from head to toe. The investigation twists and turns as they search for evidence of a kidnapping and a killer still large. At one point, there is an odd theory floated about 9/11, that involves Hunter Alden. It, also, seems rather incredible. In this novel, truth is often stranger than fiction.

The novel included some humor, often dark, and presented police work as bogged down by rules and regulations that protected the guilty and hogtied the police, preventing them from doing their job. In some cases, the police were portrayed as bumbling idiots, but for the most part, they were trying to do their job without being accused of impeding rather than serving justice. The implication seemed to be that politics was a major factor in how hard the police would be allowed to investigate a case when it involved well-connected, wealthy victims. The wealthy were in control, able to call many of the shots because their money provided them with influence and power.

The women in the book were portrayed as strong, but very arrogant and authoritarian. The men were portrayed as thinking with their small brains more often than not, making impetuous decisions that often proved fatal to their purpose, while the women’s impetuous decisions were more often successful and praiseworthy. It seemed as if the women were the stronger sex and were more in control, in this novel, anyway.

The romantic episodes throughout the story seemed unnecessary. The actual plot seemed implausible. However, this is a good beach read, plane ride read, vacation read. It will not tax the brain but will entertain for sure. The action is steady, the tension builds, and the reader will stay involved until it ends, with the moral of the story being that justice is not necessarily the end-all, be-all best conclusion, in some cases, and the Mounties always get their man!

I didn't think NYPD Red 3 is as good as the previous two. It's okay. I don't think it's a can't put down story. I find it hard to believe NYPD or any other police department would have a unit whose job is to only serve the 1%.

Zack and Kylie juggle their personal lives while solving the latest crime. Zack mind is working overtime with jealousy when Cheryl goes to ex-mother-in-law's dying bedside to support her ex-husband. Think I've had it with this series.

Good suspense read for anyone who enjoys a complex plot. However, it's not a page turner but is as good or better than the previous two. The two main characters have their own life drama going on as they solve crimes--I guess that appeals to some? There are many twists and turns, people with whom you can't figure out whether they are good or bad, and lots of surprises. I found it sort of incredulous that the bad guy had an insider trader's tip that the 9/11 attack was looming and chose to profit from it. That's the end of the series, for now, but I'd read NYPD 4 if it came out.

the James Patterson machine is slowly infiltrating this once interesting series. It's predictable with "twists" you can see coming a mile away. That said, the adventures of Kyle and Zach are always a fun, light read. I liked the humanitarian undercurrent of the Chevaliers.
