Of the many delights found in the Stories from the Golden Age by L. Ron Hubbard are the exciting pulp tales he wrote featuring the French Foreign Legion. Although many of us fans are familiar with Hubbard's classic science fiction tales, not to mention his outstanding westerns, the French Foreign Legion tales are quickly becoming among the more popular titles. While Bugles Blow dates from 1936 and offers a riveting tale of intrigue and action. When the Legion officer known only as the Lieutenant saves a beautiful young woman from slavery he sets in motion a series of events that might spell their doom. Besieged on all sides, spurned by the beautiful woman he saved, the Lieutenant faces some difficult choices as the battle rages. But it soon becomes apparent that the Lieutenant is a man at his best when under duress, and he has more than few clever ideas that might stop the battle and save their lives. While Bugles Blow is a fine piece of creative writing, action-packed and populated by lively characters. Highly recommended for readers of all ages who enjoy classic adventure tales!

Hubbard's work from the Golden Age of pulp fiction rarely fails to deliver. Typical of the genre, his stories are big on drama if small on depth. Before TV and when radio drama was still finding its way, this was entertainment for the great unwashed. And that's not a bad thing. It's fun, easy to digest entertainment."While Bugles Blow!" fits right in there, with a "Taming of the Shrew" type story wrapped in a French Foreign Legion adventure. A fiery female, a brave, devil-may-care hero, and a cast of back-stabbing bad guys all working for and/or against each other. Fun entertainment, nothing more.The audio recording is exceptional, with a full cast and sound effects enhancing the complete text of the original story (although I'd hazard to guess that a few "he saids" and "she saids" were left out). It's more than a audio book, but not quite a full dramatization. Top notch.

I really liked the audio version of this book. Different people voiced the characters, which made it seem more like an old time radio program than an audiobook. The story itself was so-so. There wasn't much of a backstory and I was sometimes confused as to which tribe was being referred to (there are two competing tribes). My favorite character was the lieutenant, probably because his character was the most highly developed. Overall, I'd give the audio version four stars and the story itself, two stars. Based on the story alone, I don't think I'd pick up another of Hubbard's books. However, the quality of the audio production would convince me to give him another try!

An enjoyable story. This audiobook was well done with a multi person cast and sound effects, more like a radio drama than a typical audiobook. The story, written in the 1930s, had a period feel to it (with the languge, actions and attitudes of the characters). Included with the cds was a small illustrated and informative booklet about L. Ron Hubard and the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction.

The production of the audiobook was great. The different accents and the sound effects worked really well.The story itself was so stereotypical of the Golden Age. The portrayal or war, relationships with women, and how people view Americans was almost comical. But if you can overlook that, the story itself was fun and entertaining.

This short audiobook was entertaining and well done. The story had some interesting twists and the characters were intriguing. There is a weak spot or two in the story line related to the logic of some events but overall I liked the story.
