About this audiobook
Widely acknowledged as the first detective novel, this story is narrated by insurance investigator Ralph Henderson, who is building a case against the sinister Baron “R**”, suspected of murdering his wife in order to obtain significant life insurance payments. Henderson descends into a maze of intrigue including a diabolical mesmerist, kidnapping by gypsies, slow-poisoners, a rich uncle’s will and three murders. Presented in the form of diary entries, family letters, chemical analysis reports and interviews with witnesses, the novel displays innovative techniques that would not become common features of detective fiction until the 1920s.

Reviews for The Notting Hill Mystery
5 ratings1 review
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The performance was fine but the story to modern ears very drawn out and very wordy. I stuck it out to the end just so I could write a review honestly. Not worth listening too unless your are a real fan of the history of detective fiction and want to hear one of the first ever detective novels. Sherlock Holmes might be later but is much better. Apart from the excessive length it is obvious what happened from a fairly early stage in addition it is based on a idea that was popular then namely mesmerism and the author appears to have been a believer in it. Sorry but I think this one should have been left in history.
