(5/5 I just finished the series at it stands and wow. That. Was. Epic.)

4/5, was very enjoyable but not read like most audiobooks and that took some adjusting.

I agree with the other review I see that there were a LOT of sound effects, and that was... at first not a positive for me but I think mostly because I wasn't used to it. Most audiobooks read like a book is being narrated, which is exactly what it is. This one is read like someone is narrating a comic book, complete with sound effects, and once I thought of it like that I was much more into it and I felt they added rather than detracted. I listen at a minimum of 1.5x speed and even then I felt like they added a lot of time to the *progression* of the story but also added to the visualization(?) of the scene, like a DM describing to their players what happens in a moment.

The trilogy has a very lighthearted yet epic feel to it, like the author had fun with it. It's a story of aliens invading the world and turning into a living video game, told primarily from the perspective of a gamer and his group of friends. It has serious moments but I don't think it's meant to be taken as a serious thing rather as a fun thing. I liked it, I hope there's more, and if the sound effects don't turn you off from listening to it then I bet you will too.

really wanted to like it, got through the first book, like the story but the amount of sound effects is jarring. Literally multiple sound effects per sentence is just horrible to listen to.
