About this audiobook
A sense of duty sends Bran Tremayne to Cornwall to confront his heritage of British nobility. Abandoned at birth, Bran wants nothing to do with the embittered remains of his family. But as a special agent for the Home Office, he senses trouble brewing along the coast.
And he can’t turn away from the vulnerable woman he encounters in the Cornish countryside. Merryn’s amnesia makes her past a mystery to them both, but with her life in danger, the only thing Bran knows for sure is that the beautiful stranger needs his protection …
But would they share a future?
Leaning into Bran is difficult enough, but can Merryn trust the strong bond—and the powerful passion—she feels for her rugged rescuer? She has no choice once Bran uncovers that she is at the center of a plot between French agents and Cornish smugglers. From misty
woodlands to stormy shores, the two join forces with a band of loyal Cornishmen to bring down a common enemy. Yet will their growing love survive the coming peril?
“Putney launches an exciting new historical romance series set in 19th-century Cornwall … Recommended for readers who like some fantasy in their historical romance and appreciate stories with chosen family and strong women.”—Library Journal

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a nice light escape from my usual foray into domestic thrillers and scary stories. While certainly no great novel it was entertaining enough. Parts of it were a bit much, for example all the talk about gifted people. Were we to assume there are tons of these people around and no one is supposed to really know of their talents. It did not make much sense. Also there was so much drinking of tea and eating of pasties, it got a bit repetitive. I did enjoy the part about the kittens and that no animals were harmed. If you are looking for a nice easy story with overall happy ending, this is a nice change.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I've read and enjoyed books from Mary Jo Putney in the past, and I couldn't resist this one - a historical romance with not only some potential spy action, along with a touch of the paranormal? I had to give it a try, and I'm happy that I did. I enjoyed the characters, their budding relationship, the mystery of where each of them came from. The investigation of a possible plot against the country was a nice addition. And the fact that several of the characters had one form or another of some type of psychic gift is something you don't always find in a historical romance. I rarely find the first book in a series to be the best of the series - much time is spent in establishing characters and relationships and the overall tone of the series to come. I feel sure that this is the case here as well - but Putney has done a fine job of establishing where it appears the series will be going, and I look forward to reading subsequent books in this series.
