Jill Barklem was drawn to the natural world from childhood. While training as an illustrator at St Martin’s School of Art, her long journeys to college gave her time to escape into the imaginary world of a colony of mice, later to be developed as the enchanting miniature world of Brambly Hedge.

The second half of the eight Brambly Hedge books concentrate more on events and adventures than the first, with their depictions of cooking, feasting and celebration, but they are still irresistible.

Wilfred Toadflax and Mr. Apple help deliver blankets to the voles who live in the high hills and end up in a misadventure. Wilfred, however, is prepared for all sorts of emergencies and saves the day with his quick thinking. This is a darling adventure story for young explorers.
