Do it for grandma!
When I was in school, we used to go on a hike on the first day of spring every year. This feels just like that. Look at all the blossoms! Our group of about 40 hikers set off from the farm Werda in the east of the Witzenberg Valley this morning and we’re making our way through orchards. I soon fall behind because I stop to take photos of the flowers at every turn. It’s still early, and the bees in the hives among the rows of fruit trees aren’t yet abuzz. But the sun will soon peek over the mountains…
Over the next few days, we’ll walk across many of the farms at the base of the Witzenberg, in the northern corner of the valley below the Groot-Winterhoek Mountains, and to the east below the Obiqua Mountains. Niel Zeeman, who farms on Rooiland, takes the lead. Somewhere in the group is Anwyn Orffer from the farm Misgund – the mastermind of the Disa Trail. And right at the back is Jurie Herbst. He and his wife Maryke manage the Waterval campsite where us hikers will overnight. Jurie knows everything about the area’s plants
