NIEUWOUDTVILLE IN BLOOM
Nieuwoudtville doesn’t wear its colourful coat year-round. The town is usually dressed in two-tone khaki: dry soil and prickly scrubland that crunches underneath your boots. The riverbeds are dusty and the famous waterfall on the Doring River slumbers in a shallow pool.
It’s a totally different story after winter rain. Rivers flow, the waterfall tumbles, streets crawl with tourists, and braai smoke rises from food stalls. Flower routes branch out into the veld like spider webs, as the landscape morphs into something resembling a bazaar.
Most visitors to the West Coast and Namaqualand in spring try to see all the flowers in one go – usually in a ludicrously short time. Flowers are fickle – when you hear about a spot in bloom, you race there as quickly as possible. As a result, you end up spending most of your time in your vehicle.
