I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The storyline was full of mystery and suspense and kept me guessing until the end. The characters were very real and I loved seeing how they changed throughout the story. This book just came out and I hope the second book in the series will come out soon. I wonder what that story will be about? There is a preview of the second book at the end, but I don’t like to read it. I like to be surprised!Great job on this suspenseful, exciting novel. There’s no bad language, no sexual scenes. Very clean, Christian fiction.

In Present Danger, Terra Connors is a special agent with the Forest Service who has been assigned to work with Jack Tanner from the Sheriff’s department on a murder case. Then one murder becomes two and there is a link to an artifact smuggling ring. The danger continues to increase as the two exes try to unravel the complicated web of crime and secrecy all while trying to avoid becoming ensnared once again by their love for each other.I was drawn in at the beginning of the book by the murder and mystery. But I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I had an especially hard time identifying emotionally with Terra, as the way she reacted in a lot of situations and especially towards her ex seemed a little strange to me. And I felt like I really didn’t know Terra and Jack very well and wanted more details about their pasts. The secondary characters didn’t have much development either, so I found myself either bored with them or wondering what purpose they served. For example, toward the end of the story, I wondered about Terra’s friends that had been in the story earlier. They took up enough time that I thought they would have some kind of significant role later, but they were never mentioned again. I also thought the pacing was off. The story dragged for a long time. Things that weren’t important went on way too long, like the whole first Bar Wars conversation, talking about Billy Dee and Boba Fett. But then all the action at the end is rushed and it’s all over. Also, characters who are barely mentioned in the whole book, and therefore have little development wind up being major players. In the end, when secrets are revealed and Terra and Jack both learn the truth they never knew and it’s supposed to be emotional, it really wasn’t for me because I just wasn’t emotionally invested. Having said all that, I appreciate authors who write clean romance. I appreciate that there wasn’t any language that I objected to in the book. The story did have a lot of action and excitement. And although there wasn’t a lot of talk about faith, it was clear to me that the major characters had a relationship with God throughout the story. So it missed the mark on some counts for me, but it hit on some others. *I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Nothing gets my attention more than an explosive start to a book. A plane crash in the mountains opens up this fast paced story and gains momentum as each chapter unravels. I love how the author has characters that are determined, fierce and a little history between them. The action is chaotic at times and keeps me bolted to my chair. I couldn’t wait to see what mystery I would try to solve. It is easy to like Jack because he is the type that takes charge and never gives up. There is something in his past that distracts him at times but that just makes him a little mysterious at times. Maybe it’s the job he does that causes him to be so intense at times. Coming onto the scene is Terra. Now she is a little complicated as she has this thing about proving herself. Oh and did I mention that her and Jack have a past together. I really liked learning about artifacts and National Parks. It intrigued me to find out that there are people willing to go to great links to take valuable and historical items from their natural in-habitat. With a possible smuggling ring going on, bodies piling up and danger everywhere this is one of my favorite books from the author. I don’t want to give much detail because then you will know the whole story. I do know that the author throws in twists that had me shaking my head. I just knew I had figured out everything and bam she kicks it up a notch. Be ready for a few hours of intense drama that will leave you looking for more books from this very talented author. I received a copy of this book from The Librarything Early Reader Program and the author. The review is my own opinion,

Most people dream about going to the beach, but I’ve always been a mountain girl. My favorite vacations as a child were in the Poconos, and I still dearly love any kind of forest or mountain setting. Add in some suspense and I’m there! So, I was eager to kick off the Rocky Mountain Courage series by Elizabeth Goddard with “Present Danger.” This novel has an assemblage of elements characteristic of the romantic suspense genre, yet it avoids becoming formulaic through the execution of the plot. Reuniting under less-than-perfect circumstances, Detective Jack Tanner and Forest Service Special Agent Terra Connors enter into a work partnership years after their romance abruptly ended. Both have moved back to their childhood homes and matured in the intervening years, determined to put the past behind them. A strange case requiring both of their skill sets resurrects secrets from the past, however, and raises questions about their families and what their current investigation has to do with the events of those fateful years. Taking this journey with the characters is a poignant reminder of how one occurrence can shape a person’s life, or as Terra’s mother told her, “The direction your life takes can often come down to one decision, one moment in time.”The trafficking of archaeological artifacts is a criminal market that I had never heard of prior to reading this book. It truly surprises me that in some ways this theft seems relatively easy to accomplish—which I absolutely do not recommend, by the way!—especially outside the U.S. I was initially drawn to the archaeological aspect of this story because it sounded unique and was an area of interest to me as a kid. I enjoyed digging in my yard and looking for arrowheads, and ancient Egypt has always intrigued me a bit. As such, I wish that there had been slightly more of that facet within the story. I found myself struggling with keeping the secondary characters straight, especially in the second half, although I understand the reasoning behind writing it this way. Aunt Nadine is my favorite character; with her endearing confusion and love for dogs, she reminds me of a great-aunt of mine who passed away nine years ago.Perhaps the most touching facet of “Present Danger” is the tender grappling of the main characters with their failures, real or perceived, and the constant striving to prove themselves. This is so relatable in our social-media-driven culture, and yet the solution remains simple: “Cease striving and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Sometimes when it seems that things are falling apart, God is actually weaving them together into a tapestry more beautiful than the one we thought we lost.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Present Danger is a wow-I-did-not-see-that-coming kind of book. Having read one other book by Elizabeth Goddard, I kind of knew what to expect, and was not disappointed. The story starts out with a plane crash and the edge-of-the-seat action continues as the body count rises. The characters are colorful and riveting, as well as realistic and either likable, relatable, or despicable. Terra and Jack had been involved in circumstances previously, and things did not end well. I enjoyed watching their relationship begin again and evolve into more than colleagues looking for a murderer. The dialogue flowed seamlessly without sounding forced, and most of the book, with its non-stop action, was unpredictable. I like how the author revealed things layer by layer, keeping me wondering how scenarios were ever going to work out. Readers who love exciting, heart-stopping mysteries will not want to miss Present Danger. It keeps you eagerly reading until the very last page. It is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series and I will be looking for the next to come.I was given a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

A suspenseful read. Jack and Terra must work together when a body is found in Montana. This book will keep you guessing as you try to figure out what all of the ties are and why the victim was killed. Jack and Terra find themselves in danger many times as they try to figure out what the victim was doing and if it is tied to trafficking. A great read and I look forward to the next one.I received a copy to read, the review is mine .

Begins with a helicopter crash and a mysterious package and ends in a shocking twist. Elizabeth Goddard's Present Danger is the first book of her new series Rocky Mountain Courage. She has filled it with archaeological artifacts, dead bodies and secrets - nothing is as expected.  The Montana forest setting adds to the mystery of the storyline. The ancient artifacts which play a major role are intriguing and make you want to learn more. The characters are easy to like and develop well throughout the pages. If you have read any of her previous series, you will recognize some secondary characters that are brought into the scenes. If you are looking for a true who-dun-it mystery, then add this to your tbr list. It is a fast read that will keep you guessing until the very end.

She's done it again! Author Elizabeth Goddard has written a story that kept me totally immersed with the characters and their unpredictable lives. Terra Connors and Jack Tanner find themselves working together to solve a murder, but they quickly become involved in something much deeper. Present Danger begins with a plane crash and a missing pilot in Montana, and the danger escalates when the trafficking of Native American artifacts is discovered. Murder, theft, and unexpected obstacles make this a book that I couldn't put down and I loved that there are snippets of information that seem to solve the case....until another twist is introduced and I'm proven wrong again!I'm always amazed at Goddard's ability to create characters that are both intriguing and endearing. Terra and Jack each have trust issues, and they both have questions about their faith, but their biggest hurdle may be in recognizing their true feelings for each other. A love they believed long dead and buried may still exist, but is it possible to forget past hurts and hidden secrets?Trust, forgiveness, and God's Plan are key ingredients in this faith-filled story that also includes a large serving of romance. I recommend Present Danger to all who enjoy Christian romantic suspense and I look forward to the second book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series. I received an advanced reader's copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Wowza is all I can say!! I am trying to figure out how to write a review without giving anything away... so here we go!! This is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series and boy did it start with a bang. As soon as you start reading you are immediately intrigued and captured by the story. I mean it is definitely one of those you want to stay up all night to try to figure out who-dunit. It is completely non-stop action from beginning to end. There are some twists that I just could not figure out who the culprit was at all. The ending had me shocked and then Aunt Nadine drops another nugget of information at the end that leaves you wanting more!!In this story we meet Jack who is a former FBI Agent now working as a detective in his home town. He has returned to take care of his aunt Nadine who is suffering from dementia. He has some things he is trying to work through from his past and also the fact that his former girlfriend Terra is back in town working as US Forest Service Special Agent. Their romance was cut short when Jack left to finish his training for the FBI and was never resolved so she is slightly sore about that. The love story between them does blossom throughout the story but it is very slow and not truly the focus which I found a good balance. I was so engrossed on the suspense part of the storyline that I did not miss the romance like I do in most stories. The author definitely left you sort of hanging with Aunt Nadine'c comment to Jack towards the end of the book regarding his father and now I have so many questions!! I can't wait until the next book and I hope to see these characters again! I really enjoyed this story but that may be because I am a fan fo suspense stories. Like I said there is so much going on and you are trying to put all the pieces together that it's hard to put the book down. There is one slight drawback for me regarding this book and that is that although it is considered a Christian Romantic Suspense, the element of christianity was very weak. They may have mentioned God towards the end as in calling out to Him in time of need, but that was the only reference to it. I understand that Christian fiction books don't have to be immersed in theology and I don't expect that in all books because I understand there are times and places for that but I think in this book it could have been interwoven a little bit more. That being said it was a clean read and I definitely recommend it. If you enjoy books by suspense writers like Colleen Coble and Irene Hannon you should pick this one up!I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I only read romantic suspense every once in a while, but anytime I read a book by Elizabeth Goddard, I’m reminded of how exciting this genre is. The story swiftly pulled me in and introduced me to diverse and fascinating characters. I was especially drawn to Terra. The story started strong, with plenty of action and intensity, immersing me in the diverse storylines and curious about who-dun-it. I was captured by the first page and never lost interest. The relationship between Terra (love the name, by the way) and Jack is complex but believable. Their story was delivered with perfect timing. Initially, the author didn’t reveal too much or too little about their pasts, which I was happy with, because a backstory dump instantly removes me from a story. Their history trickles out at a good stride, keeping me curious and fully invested. Jack is also a multifaceted character. I loved his dedication to his aunt with dementia, especially with everything else he had going on in his life, heart, and mind. And I haven’t even touched on the murder mystery aspect. Whew! I won’t say too much about that, only that it is far from predictable or ordinary. I was intrigued by the history and laws surrounding the Native American culture and artifacts. I can only imagine the time and research that went into creating this full-bodied story. Kudos to the author.Present Danger is packed with suspense and had me fully captured and absorbed from the beginning. Although romantic suspense isn’t one of the main genres I read, I love Ms. Goddard’s gift of storytelling and can’t wait for book 2 in this heart-pounding series.Dɪsᴄʟᴏsᴜʀᴇ: I ʀᴇᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ ᴀ ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴍᴇɴᴛᴀʀʏ ᴄᴏᴘʏ ᴏғ ᴛʜɪs ʙᴏᴏᴋ. Jack Tanner has returned to his new town to care for his ailing aunt. After leaving the FBI and joining the local detectives on a case involving a body found in the local national forest. So, he shouldn’t be surprised when he runs into his former love, Terra Connors, an agent for the US Forest Service. However, as they team up to find a killer, will they be able to overcome their past history, including the way Jack left Terra all those years ago?Author Elizabeth Goddard pens another suspenseful romance full of nuanced characters with deep pasts and intertwined histories. With her talent once again on full display, Goddard leaves readers gasping for more through the revolving narratives of not only our main characters, but the pilot seemingly connected to the recent murders. With an intertwined and fully unexpected ending readers will not be disappointed in this newest series debut.*Disclaimer: a review copy was provided by the publisher; all opinions are my own.

If you are looking for a suspenseful read complete with twists and turns and a surprise ending I didn’t see coming, Present Danger just might be the book for you. This is the first in the Rocky Mountain Courage series by Elizabeth Goddard. I thought the plot was interesting and the characters were very relatable. I really enjoyed a surprise visit from some characters in her last series as well. The one issue I had with the book is that I think it got off to a bit of a slow start. I felt like the author took a while to set the story up, but once she did I was hooked and just had to know how it ended.I look forward to the next book in the series.Thank you to the author and publisher for a copy of the book.

Present Danger by Elizabeth Goddard is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series. This is a well written, fast paced story that I didn’t want to put down. Jack has returned to his home town to help care for his ailing aunt and takes a job that brings him in contact with a former girlfriend, Terra. The two end up working together to find a murderer and connections between other events happening. This is a great Christian Romantic Suspense story. It is filled with strong characters and lots of suspense with many unexpected twist and turns. The characters are not only dealing with the stress of their jobs but also the stresses in their family relationships. I really enjoyed how quickly Jack and Terra were able to put their past behind them and work together. I also enjoyed how they both watched out for their family members and each other.I received a copy of the book through the Launch Team for Present Danger. This is my honest review.

I was first introduced to Elizabeth Goddard’s romantic suspense novels with her Uncommon Justice series. I loved the rugged settings of those books and was excited to dig into Present Danger, the first book of a new series. Goddard has created another winner! I loved the main characters, the new-to-me Montana setting, and the twisting plot full of puzzling clues and serious bad guys. If you are looking for fast-paced suspense with a wonderful second-chance romance, this is the book for you.Main characters Jack and Terra have a history. Their romance ended badly when Jack walked away to join the FBI. Now years have passed and they are both back in their home county — he is a sheriff’s deputy and she is a USFS special agent. Thrown together by a body found in the national forest, the two work hard to keep things professional. But those embers of romance refuse to die! The two have tried to live up to or live down their parents’ legacies. Always trying to prove themselves and feeling like they have missed the mark puts barriers up for their relationship to go forward. I think this aspect of the story is very real. Many people struggle with being good enough. The two are real and relatable — outstanding in their respective careers, but still vulnerable to doubts and regrets. Their relationship is a big part of the story, but the murder investigation kept me turning the pages. There are plane crashes, break-ins, murders, and trafficking of valuable artifacts. I needed to know whodunit now! LOL. Goddard kept me guessing to the very end. I seriously suspected everyone! In Present Danger, Goddard introduced some characters that are sure to be the focus of future books in this series. I’m already intrigued! Can’t wait for more from this talented author.Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Revell for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Present Danger by Elizabeth Goddard is the first book in her Rocky Mountain Courage series. US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Conners and former FBI Special Agent Jack Tanner are called in to investigate a dead body found in the national forest. What they uncover could cost them their very lives. Terra and Jack were a very likable team. I thought the chemistry between them made a very good balance for all the suspense and mystery in the story. The surprise twist at the end was awesome and very unexpected! A great beginning to the series. I received this book from LibraryThing for my honest review.

This novel is a great start to an awesome new suspense series! I’m always really impressed with the detail and research that Elizabeth Goddard writes in her novels and this book is just as good as her last series. She even includes accurate specifics like the mountains of paperwork that these agents have to complete and the legalities of an investigation, such as obtaining the correct permits. This attention to detail makes the story come alive and seem more realistic to me. I also loved the action and suspense in the novel and did not suspect the villain until the secret was revealed at the end! The relationship of the main characters (old flames forced to work together) is one of my favorite romantic tropes and the author does a great job of building on their past relationship and moving the romance forward. The scenic setting was easy to picture with the vivid descriptions and served as a great backdrop for the story. I enjoyed this novel and cannot wait for book two!I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

If held on to long enough, bitterness, grudges and regrets can create monsters.Wow! The family secrets, people left behind, hidden agendas and more take the reader on a ride of mystery and intrigue not soon to be forgotten. Detective Jack Tanner and Special Agent Terra Connors have a somewhat muddy past - will they be able to set that aside and work together to solve this puzzle involving murder, trafficking of antiquities and more? The danger never ends for our crime fighting duo. A plane crash, forest fire, kidnapping, murders and more secrets put them and their coworkers in scary situations. If no one is willing to talk, will the murders ever end? How often do we cover things up with secrets that end up creating lasting differences in us and others all in the name of not wanting to cause pain? Do we end up creating monsters? This ARC was received through Revell, Baker Publishing Group and NetGalley. The comments and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

Elizabeth Goddard keeps getting better with each new book she writes. Present Danger is the first book in her Rocky Mountain Courage Series. The reader is introduced to USFS Special Agent Terra Connors. She loves these mountains and forests and feels a special connection with this area as her mother died there on a rescue mission. The adventure begins with rescue workers searching for two lost girls, when they stumble on a dead body with stab wounds at the base of a cliff. Terra is unexpectedly paired with her former flame, Jack Tanner. Jack had broken her heart when he left her with only a letter saying he loved her enough to leave her. After an awkward beginning, Terra and Jack find that they work well together and may still have feelings for each other after all these years. When someone seems to be targeting Terra and her family, Jack must try to keep her safe while hunting for the killer before he strikes again. Present Danger has all the elements of a good story. It has a beautiful setting, great descriptions, likable characters, and a fast paced plot line. If you like Christian fiction with suspense and light romance, then you will enjoy this book.

This book starts out with a crash, and keeps on going. First an airplane crash, leading to a body that wasn't in the plane, but went off a mountain, but there is more. This is the catalyst to bring two former sweethearts back together, now US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Connors, and Montana Detective Jack Tanner, they now have to work together to solve a murder and stolen artifacts.I loved the mind of this author and we take a lot of twists and turns, shots and crashes, and bodies, but keep turning the pages, surprises abound here and are dropped all way up to the last page.We are given so much love and care for their families, and with the twists you will be wondering whom is involved and whom is innocent.I loved the ending, and then the tease of the next book in this series, which I can't wait for!I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

"The direction your life takes can often come down to one decision, one moment in time."Such an exciting and adrenaline-filled start to a new series! In her trademark fashion, Elizabeth Goddard weaves an action-packed, heart-pounding suspense with a complex and intricate plot that will have you guessing until the very end. I really enjoyed how all the pieces and clues fell into place to create a bigger picture than either of the main characters suspected when they took on the investigation. Jack and Terra have their voices in the story as the main characters but there is a third voice from a man named Chance whose role in the case is quite ambiguous until the end. I can't wait to read the second book in the series about Terra's friend Erin and Jack's co-worker Nathan.Jack, ex-FBI and now a county detective, and Terra, ex-NPS and now a forest service special agent, have a rocky past together. Despite having grown and matured through the years that separated them, they still have a difficult and awkward time working together to solve a murder investigation in the national forest of Montana. The initial investigation leads to more confusing and deadly encounters and it gets personal when Terra becomes targeted. Jack and Terra's backstory is heavy with regret, self-doubt, and mistakes but their feelings for each other solidify as they dodge bullets, brainstorm theories, and work to protect others from harm. Archaeological trafficking is something I wasn't really aware of until this book. I received the book from Revell and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Thank you in advance to the publisher, Revell (a division of Baker Books) for providing an advanced review copy through not only Library Thing, but the author’s launch team. A positive review was not requested or required, and all words are my own. While this is a new series, fans of the Uncommon Justice series will be delighted to see two characters return from that one. Though I’m keeping mum on who. Anyway …Don’t let the gorgeous and colorful cover fool you – this is one intense ride! In the first book of this series, Goddard honestly kept me guessing right up until the end. I couldn’t predict what was going to happen. And, the short chapters kept me engrossed in the exciting action. I honestly had to keep reading it – and yes it took me four (4) days to read it, though it (for me) really is a two (2) day read. I confess that I was caught up with some stuff at home and couldn’t really focus on this – that is in NO WAY the fault of the author or this story! Goddard builds the momentum page by page. But, the action isn’t the only thing going here – as usual, it is the characters in this book. Terra Connors and Jack Tanner. Right off the reader knows there is a history with them. It’s a mystery dance of “will they, won’t they, what’s going on with them”. Add in Terra’s family which is complicated, along with the other characters – the reader is on a collision course for an exciting read.Though word of warning – there are references to drug and alcohol abuse in it though these are not in the current story but prior to the events in the book. What starts as a simple plane crash turns into a murder, then another murder … but more than who the killer is, who is “Chance”? Chance, a plane courier with a past, finds himself crashed. He survives, but won’t for long if he doesn’t get a “package”. Jack gets a call about a body, but it isn’t who he thinks. That brings Terra into the investigation. Almost right off, Goddard sets up book #2 for Erin Larson, a close friend of Terra’s for more than one reason. There is a connection between Chance and the poor deceased Jim, an insurance agent. Though the poor dead guy is keeping a secret. As the investigation begins, Terra’s brother Owen returns. As an amputee, he finds solace in equine therapy and plans to use their grandfather’s ranch to build a retreat. Terra and Jack soon learn that perhaps Jim, and possibly Chance, were part of an artifact smuggling and re-sale ring. Something Terra has close personal experience with. But the stakes heat up when yet another mystery person enters into the equation. And, Goddard had me asking “who are all these people? What is going on …” A cozy part by almost halfway – Terra relaxing with hot chocolate and popcorn had me craving the same. That was until a break-in, another break-in … were the two related? The author didn’t give me time to piece it together before another dead body turned up. I was wondering if the break-ins and murders were connected in a story that just keep upping the excitement factor, along with a list of people I was mistrusting; current count by chapter 41 – around five (5). By chapter 55, the action picks up a bit more, leaving me with a “do not put this book down at all costs” feeling. I definitely echoed Jack’s sentiment about “this just gets better and better”, especially when dead person #3 shows up. And, that reduced the “not trusting this character” pool down to four (4).The bad guy is revealed at the end of chapter 60 with a stunning twist – and it’s a good one, but not nearly as good when who Chance is revealed as. DID NOT SEE THAT COMING AT ALL!! Nope! Chance’s real identity was revealed a few pages later in the next chapter. Talk about being stunned! The end is definitely bittersweet as the reader learns the truth about Jack’s father. It is touching, sad, poignant, and beautiful.Readers won’t see a conclusion with Chance’s character (so hoping to find out in book #2).This was definitely a great way to begin the series! Still left with a lot of questions though. One thing that stood out; and maybe I missed it – there is a moment when a memorial is vandalized, though I didn’t see where it was revealed.Another thing? Terra’s mysterious boss. Only voicemails? Not seen? What was going on? Will we see him in book #2? Other than the main story; there is a sweet, and yet sad side story with Jack’s “aunt” who is believed to be suffering from dementia despite the fact she’s not quite 70. She’s trying to find a little dog’s “lost boy” and is trying to enlist Jack’s help. This part had a much happier ending and will definitely make the reader smile. The dialogue about the “war looting” that the plot comes around to can be a bit overwhelming for someone uneducated about it. Some art lovers might appreciate it while others might be a little lost. This was more suspense than romance, but fans of the author and genre likely won’t be disappointed at all in her second series. Also, if you’re a fan of Star Wars you will likely be delighted at some of the references in this. One quote that got around there, made its way here: “I have a bad feeling about this …”As this is distributed by Revell; there will be themes of faith, prayer, and God. These are not central to the story though. The series title gets its name from an inscription on a memorial citing lost rescuers “Rocky Mountain Courage”. I’m excited to see where this series is going and cannot wait for the second book this fall!

If you enjoy works by Susan Sleeman, Dee Henderson and Lynette Eason, you will probably like Elizabeth Goddard’s novels. There was factor that I was not satisfied with: while there is a faith element to the novel, it isn’t as strong as I like to see. It was almost an afterthought, added in to ensure there was something faith-related, which I found quite disappointing. And the character’s faith did not seem to develop or grow throughout the story, which was surprising. There are three major characters in this novel. Terra Connors is a United States Forestry Service Special Agent with a troubled past and big shoes to fill, desiring to be a hero like her mom who died doing a SAR mission (Search and Rescue). Jack Tanner was her boyfriend years ago, but he loved her enough to let her go… or so his letter claimed. He left for Quantico, became an FBI Agent and now is back in Big Rapids, Montana to help his Aunt who has dementia. He took a “lower” job as a Greyback County Sherriff’s Office Detective. Chance Carter is a man whose past is controlling his future. All he wants is to go home, but his past has placed his family in danger. Then his plane goes down. While searching for missing twin girls, the body of Chance’s rescuer is found and Terra and Jack meet up again for the first time in 6 years and are put together to solve the murder. The twists and turns keep you guessing. The connections between the suspects and the good guys lead you into interesting territory and make you wonder if new heartbreak is in store for Terra or Jack or both of them. Terra’s mom told her that one decision could change your whole life and we see echoes of this throughout the story, as characters’ decision impact one another’s lives. The past shapes us but does not have to control us. We can learn from it. Secrets, no matter how well we think they are buried, always come to light. Something both Jack and Terra learn as family secrets on both sides come out. The characters are wonderfully human and believable. They are flawed people who grow through the novel and who learn from the past. I especially liked Owen, even though he played a relatively minor role in this novel – I really hope he gets his own story! I enjoyed the book thoroughly and am looking forward to Erin’s story, which is number two in this series. The sneak peek at the back of this one already has me hooked, but to be honest, I’m even more looking forward to Alex’s story, which I assume is book three. He had me hooked at the dinner scene and even more so when he went all “protective big brother” on Terra later that same evening. I want to know his story!

Elizabeth Goddard give us a very suspenseful novel with an intricate plot. Jack and Terra are interesting, sympathetic characters. Certainly the mystery is complex and not easy to figure out, holding the reader's interest well. My only quibble is the ending. The primary resolution is fine, but so many things in the main characters' lives are tied up with neat little bows at the end that it becomes a bit unbelievable. Overall, though, a fine novel worthy of a read.I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Review of Advanced Reading CopyA pilot on a questionable mission crashes his Ole Blue, his Piper Cherokee, in the Gallatin National Forest, triggering a string of murders and a hunt for a mysterious package. Grayback County Sheriff’s Detective Jack Tanner, part of a search and rescue team hunting for missing twin girls, discovers the body of insurance agent Jim Raymond.US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Conners is surprised to find Jack at the crime scene; the two of them shared a past relationship that had not ended well. Nevertheless, Terra and Jack are determined to leave the past in the past. Together, they begin an investigation that soon includes a string of murders. Neither realizes that the murders, triggered by a hunt for a mysterious package, will force revelations of long-hidden crimes and deeply-buried secrets that may change everything for both of them.Told from a trio of perspectives, Terra, Jack, and airplane pilot Chance, the unfolding story offers readers unexpected revelations that ramp up the danger and take the story in unexpected directions. For Terra and Jack, the investigation becomes a puzzle for which they need to find answers while being forced to face their own insecurities.First in the author’s Rocky Mountain Courage series, “Present Danger” plays out against the backdrop of Montana’s Gallatin National Forest. The unfolding story of multiple murders and the trafficking of archeological artifacts is both captivating and riveting. Well-developed [if flawed] characters and a compelling plot pull the reader into the telling of the tale from the outset. With a slowly-revealed backstory, the relationship between Jack and Terra assumes an intriguing immediacy and, evolving against the subterfuge of secrets and lies, creates suspense and intrigue as deep as the danger the duo face as their investigation takes on a sinister undertone. Readers will find much to appreciate in this multi-layered tale of murder, mystery, romance, and faith.Highly recommended.

Title: Present Danger (Rocky Mountain Courage #1)Author: Elizabeth GoddardPages: 384Year: 2021Publisher: RevellMy rating: 5 out of 5 stars. What an excellent start to a new series by Elizabeth Goddard! Former FBI Special Agent Jack Turner is working as a detective in the state of Montana where he grew up. Jack believes he needs to prove himself due to his father’s apparent lack of character and the way he died in disgrace. Along with Jack is another US Special Forest Service Special Agent Terra Conners. Together they must solve a crime that has brought about a couple of local murders. The tale starts out with a plane crash. The pilot survives but the package he is to deliver goes missing. When he wakes up in the hospital and without the package, Chance Carter leaves the hospital to locate the package with the hope of finally being free of whoever has been blackmailing him. The deeper Jack and Terra dig into why certain people are dead, the bigger the circle of suspects. On top of all that, Jack and Terra are trying to learn how to deal with their past history and breakup that still brings doubts to both of them.In this brand-new series, readers will be taken on one wild and crazy adventure! The suspects in the story are dealing with stolen Native American artifacts that on the black market can bring in huge amounts of money. Add the flavor of past romance with the wonder of if it will be rekindled and it gets interesting to say the least! I enjoyed getting to know the new characters, in new places and with new mysteries to solve. There are climactic points audiences won’t soon forget, and I for one cannot wait until the second book is released in the Fall of 2021. There is a teaser included in the back of the book.Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed the book, the murder mystery was a good mystery incorporating past events to the present murders. The characters were likable if flawed, each dealing with issues past and present. Smuggling rare artifacts from the Middle East is a timely topic. Jack Tanner, the detective son the case and Terra Connors, from the US Forestry Service are working the case together while trying to find their way back to each other. This is a good story and I will read more from this author.

I've read this author before. This novel is book 1 of her Rocky Mountain Courage series. The characters are likable, if flawed. Each main character has strengths and weaknesses. I suspect some of the minor characters will get fleshed out more in subsequent books if they're set in this setting. Jack is driven--wanting to prove that he's not like his father, upset that he didn't save his cousin Sarah in time--and caring, returning to care for Aunt Nadine, who raised him, when she seems to have dementia.Tessa strives to live up to her late mother's heroism and is affected by her father leaving them with their grandfather and walking out on them as well as Jack walking out on her years before to pursue his dream.Their lives intersect again when a murder investigation turns up a possible artifact-selling ring. All the stories have twists that you might not expect. For most of the book, this read more like a gentle mystery than a suspense book. There were some moments of suspense, but more investigation than suspense. I agree with another reviewer who said many of these books rely on the romantic interests having had a past together to circumvent the "they fell deeply in love in a short time" pitfall. It is a bit of an overworked plot in this genre.*Note: I received an ARC of this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program with the expectation of providing an honest review.

Present Danger, a new novel out in April has a great cast of characters, good plot and well worth your time. Montana wilderness makes for a great place to host a murder and the scenic descriptions are as good as the human ones. When Terra Conners agrees to assist on a murder case; the last person she plans on seeing is Jack Tanner – the guy who left her fifteen years ago with no explanation. Jack was an FBI agent who is now with the Sherriff’s department.Lots of history has happened since Jack left and somehow a lot of it is tied to this case. Terra’s father has been a no show for most of her life; as has Jack’s. What we learn about them in this book is fascinating. Indian artifacts, Mid-Eastern artifacts and greed all play a part as well.Terra and Jack are not only fighting to learn the truth behind the they are fighting to save their loved ones.
