About this audiobook

No, I didn't kill the dead human. If I had, I wouldn't dump the body in the station mall.

When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people ? who knew?)

Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans!

Again!

Editor's Note

Murderbot didn’t do it…

Everyone’s favorite Murderbot is back — this time, to solve a murder it definitely didn’t commit and is determined to prove so. Full of that exasperated Artificial Intelligence wit that makes this series such a delight.

In the latest installment of the Murderbot Diaries, the SEC Unit is called upon to solve a crime. A body is found on the normally peaceful Preservation Station. Those in charge immediately close access to the station, setting up a “closed-room” mystery. The SEC Unit is put off at being treated as a potential killer by humans that do not know it, setting it up as a persecuted “other.” This is the latest dimension in the evolution of the SEC Unit from a robot with a violent past to an artificial intelligence trying to fit into human society. As usual, the reader is privy to the SEC Unit’s sarcastic and humorous internal dialogue about human foibles. This can almost be read as a standalone, but I would recommend at least reading the first in the series, All Systems Red, before embarking upon this one. The entire series is a lot of fun.

Solid storytelling and a good episode of the Murderbot Diaries, but not as interesting as the other stories in the series. The new characters don't have as much personality as the established ones, and the story is tightly plotted but full of technical details that are a little harder to follow on audiobook. Still love it, though.

It's ok. Chronologically it is set after #4 Exit Strategy and before the novel #5 Network Effect. It's a standalone novella with Murderbot improbably playing the role of detective on Preservation Station.Unlike Network Effect it does feel very much stylistically like a Murderbot book. But I would only read it if you really want more of the character.

There's a body on the Preservation Station, and Murderbot is called in to help investigate, but the 'human' security doesn't want its help, but it does anyway. It had promised not to hack the security, but it knows ways to do things that won't break those promises.

A short story of only 168 pages, but a lot of backstory information is packed in, though, without it, the story wouldn't be so funny, nor would you know how inventive Murderbot was.

I really love these stories, and Murderbot, though I do wish they were longer so to spend more time in this world, (and for it to earn one more star). Very wonderful series!

And now to wait until another one is released...

Another fast and exciting Murderbot adventure. My only complaint is that it's the last one currently published. Roll on next installment!

Fugitive Telemetry is Murderbot #6 and is the only one that almost stands alone, though of course I think everyone should read the whole wonderful series. This installment has a strong mystery plot and the usual delightful snark along with it from our POV character. Wells has written, frankly, the best voice in science fiction here and I love every bit of this series; this might not be the strongest volume of them all, but it's just as enjoyable as the rest.

Kinda short, but wonderful to hear about Murderbot again. Always make me smile with his pointed comments about humans as he is so werry human himself.

Muderbot - Preservation Station Detective Edition

I enjoyed this one. It was a different change of pace, set entirely on Preservation Station instead of hopping around the Corporation Rim where Murderbot books passage with BotPilots in exchange for media, you know, pretty much like Novellas #2-4. This was like a sci-fi detective show, and we got to learn more about life on Preservation Station, and to an extent, in the Preservation Alliance.

But I'm confused as to when this is supposed to take place. It feels like it happens after Exit Strategy because nothing is said of Murderbot 2.0 swimming around Murderbot's head, or of Murderbot's plans to head off into the unknown with ART, per the end of Network Effect. Oh, and while this is a 5-star story, I still give it 4 stars since we're apparently back to overcharging for novellas, again.

I don't know how to adequately express my love for this whole series.

In this 6th book in the Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot is confronted with a mysterious death. Convinced that it has something to do with GrayCris, Murderbot has to convince station security that it needs to help solve the murder.

I've said it before, and I will say it again, Murderbot is my favorite character ever. It's such an amazing character and I've loved seeing its growth throughout the whole series. This book in the series was interesting. I found it fun that Murderbot was helping solve a murder. It was fun to see some of the original characters again along with meeting new ones. I had so much fun reading this one, and I do hope that there will be more to come!

I love Murderbot and I possibly love him(/it) even more as an inspector. I would fully sign on for more "Murderbot solves crime" books. This book does feel not as necessary to the series as the other books - the GrayCris connection is merely supposition for most of the book - and it doesn't really fill in the blanks with any of that overarching plot. But it is a nice little window into Murderbot's life between Exit Strategy and Network Effect. A bit of a Murderbot-POV equivalent of the Home short story.

This book is set before Network Effect but after Exit Strategy. It is good to remember that since how some characters react to Murderbot are different in this book than in Network Effect. There is a murder on station and for the most part security on board doesn’t have much experience solving them. There is no direct camera footage of what happened so there is an investigation. Murderbot gets drawn into it and uses the skills it has picked up from all the entertainment videos and it’s security background. This is a good locked room murder mystery with the entire station subbing as the locked room. I don’t want to give any of the plot away but I do enjoy how Murderbot and Dr. Mensah interact in this series.

Murderbot is back and dealing with humans in a more understanding way. Still complaining and sarcastic and wanting only to watch its own media feeds, but seeming to gain a bit of patience. It is assigned to help Preservation planet security solve an unusual case of murder. Unusual because the planet has only a 7% chance of a murder ever being committed on it. Murderbot (aka SecUnit) cooperates to a large extent and impresses the security leaders in spite of itself.

A tidy detective story. It felt unmoored from the larger narrative arc of the previous books, which was fine. Not so good that I'd recommend someone start reading here and then go back for book 1, but a solid addition that underscored a few motifs that have been hinted at in previous books: the universe is big, and the residents of Preservation colony know very little about it; the hyper-capitalist system of companies is corrupt; Murderbot is not the only person in the universe who would like to break free of the companies' governance.

Good entry in the Murderbot series, with more mystery and less action than the other books.

Wells' books featuring Murderbot are all fun - this one a bit overridden by specialized robot speak at times, but still an action-packed, very cinematic book. The story takes a back seat to the central character AI who has an ingrained aversion to humans and would rather be catching up on his shows. The character reminds me a little bit of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe who would rather be playing with his orchids. Lots of tongue-in-cheek humor.

So far, Murderbot has never disappointed me -- not in snarky dialogue, not in adventure, not in mystery or awkward friendships and this episode is no exception. I admit the full length novel has whetted my appetite for longer adventures, but there are some really interesting seeds for new relationships in this novella.

A perfectly cromulent novella. The refugee angle was fresh. The mystery kept me guessing. Murderbot is growing as a...person? and I liked the development of its relationship of mutual suspicion with Senior Indah. I missed Dr. Mensah and, of course, ART.

Murderbot continues to be their own prickly self. A very strange murder leads through some twisty plotting. The murderer becomes apparent about halfway through the story, although the What and the Why take longer.
