Reviews for Magic Animal Rescue

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Maggie, a young girl with a talent for spotting and taking care of the magical creatures of the Enchanted Forest, whose story began in Maggie and the Flying Horse and continued in Maggie and the Wish Fish, returns in this third beginning chapter-book devoted to her adventures. Now living with Bob the Stableman and his wife Nora, Maggie is desperate to do something to prove her worth, especially after being ridiculed by her obnoxious stepbrother Peter. Her kindness and quick thinking save the day, as she finds a way to help an injured unicorn, a phoenix whose regeneration was interrupted, and a water nymph who needs help dealing with some goblins...I wasn't terribly impressed with the first two entries in E.D. Baker's Magic Animal Rescue series, finding them rather flat and hum-drum, especially for books meant to be about fantastical creatures. That said, although I'm not sure why, somehow Maggie and the Unicorn was a bit of an improvement for me. I found the story fairly engaging, and was more invested in Maggie's adventures than I had been. I'm glad to be reading this series, despite my lukewarm response to it overall, as I want to increase my knowledge of books intended for readers who are just getting going with chapter books. Most of my children's book reading tends to focus on picture-books intended for children younger than this, or fully developed middle-grade novels intended for older readers. With a fairy-tale setting, fantastical creatures, and plenty of sparkle on the cover, I think this is a series that will have appeal in the target demographic, even though it isn't quite my cup of tea.
