Take a dash of Harry Potter and a splash of Oliver Twist, add a pinch of steampunk and a sprinkle of Victorian fairy lore, and what do you get? The Gryphon Chronicles! A rollicking fantasy adventure series that’s as much fun for grownups as it is for kids.
Strange new talents...
Jake is a scrappy orphaned pickpocket living by his wits on the streets of Victorian London. Lately he’s started seeing ghosts and discovers he can move solid objects with his mind! He has no idea why. Next thing he knows, a Sinister Gentleman and his minions come hunting him. On the run for his life, Jake is plunged headlong into a mysterious world full of magic and deadly peril. A world that holds the secret to who he really is: the long-lost heir of an aristocratic family—with magical powers!
But with treacherous enemies closing in, it will take all of his wily street instincts and the help of his friends—both human and magical—to solve the mystery of what happened to his parents, and defeat the foes who never wanted the Lost Heir of Griffon to be found…

After reading the Christmas special I was quite happy to give this one a try too. Not bad, a good read for Middle Grade readers and still trying to decide whether to buy the rest of the series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I really liked this audio book. It's perfect to listen to in the car with kids- or just by yourself! (Like I did!) It's probably one of the best 'kid friendly' books I've listened to in quite awhile.
While I liked Jake, I loved Dani. She was such a great, driving element in the story line. The narrator did a wonderful job- I love his ability to go from 'villain' to 'cocky village street kid' to ' noble matriarch' to 'hyperactive young genius.'
I noticed some reviews made comparisons to Harry Potter. This book doesn't rely much on the same elements. The only real commonalities were that they both take place in England and our hero is a young man who can perform magic. Please don’t compare them.

This book is too much fun! There is heroism, compassion, villainy, humor, sarcasm. badassery and wiseassery. Jake learns that he has more than one friend in the world, and that magic and magical beings are real. In some ways, this is Atticus O'Sullivan meets the Artful Dodger and Dani is a younger version of Cinderella. There is a Guardian, an angel, mythical monsters, a young genius, shapeshifters, a giant spider who sounds like Renfield, and more! If you've ever been 12, or know someone who is 12, you will enjoy this tale of good vs evil. The story is well-crafted, and the characters are even better.
Jamie performs this fine fantasy with a flair and adds depth and voice to the character interpretations in a fully engaged manner.

Jake is a street kid and thief. He's always in trouble with the Constable. Now more than the Constable is after him. A murderer wants him but why? So does Guardian Stone; again, why?
THE LOST HEIR is the beginning of The Gryphon Chronicles. Jake is an orphan but he discovers that his life has been a lie. He finds others who know of his powers which set him apart from his rookery friends. Dani O'Dell has been his conscience during his days in the rookery and she follows him when he leaves the rookery. Can she keep him safe? Can he keep her safe? Will she stay with Jake or will she be sent home?
I enjoyed this book. The set-up for this series is good. The time and place are brought to life through the words. The characters are given to us. I wanted Jake to find his past but I did not want him to leave Dani behind. I knew who was good and bad and questionable (mostly.) I love the family that Jake finds when he leaves the rookery. Waldrick, the current Earl of Griffon, is a hiss-worthy villain as is his consort Fionnula. An interesting group of henchmen accompany them including Malwort the Spider (not sure about him.) Jake's companions are an eclectic group. Some outright heroes such as Guardian Derek Stone. Others have gifts and lessons that will aid Jake as he takes his rightful place in the world. Dani will still be his conscience.
This series will be a fun read. I cannot wait for their next adventure nor the answer to the cliffhanger (will he or won't he?)
