Elizabeth Peters

Elizabeth Peters earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago’s famed Oriental Institute. During her fifty-year career, she wrote more than seventy novels and three nonfiction books on Egypt. She received numerous writing awards and, in 2012, was given the first Amelia Peabody Award, created in her honor. She died in 2013, leaving a partially completed manuscript of The Painted Queen.

By 1983, when this book was published, Peters had written 17 works of fiction, and she was improving all the time. This is better than the previous book in the series, which is better than the one before that. I imagine Peters had three novels going all at once at any given time. I'm surprised that she wrote so many novels before her Peabody series, given her knowledge of Ancient Egypt, and their eventual success.

Dr. Vicky Bliss involves herself (apparently again, I haven't read anything else in this series) with an art thief. I wish there had been more dialogue between them. The story moves at a nice pace and was pleasant diversion (anything unpleasant takes place off stage), but nothing more.

When Vicky receives a red rose, a mysterious note, and a one-way ticket to Stockholm in the mail, she immediately knows that Sir John Smythe, international art and jewel thief, is behind it. Vicky heads off to Stockholm to give John a piece of her mind for their last encounter, where he absconded out of their Paris hotel room in the middle of the night, leaving her to deal with the hotel bill and the police officers pounding on the door.In Stockholm, Vicky finds that John may be on the verge of stealing a long-lost Viking treasure. Vicky rolls up her sleeves to protect the treasure from John and any other thieves who may be after it.

Im hooked-totally hooked on John -everything John & Vicky's wicked sense of humor. I just love this series. Each book gets better & better! Im wishing I had the next book to read- have to wait until the library opens in the morning. : (

Not as fun as Street of the Five Moons, but still nice book. Couldn't really recognise Sweden in the book, but that doesn't matter much.

Listened to the Recorded Books cassette edition. Not as good as Street of the Five Moons but better than Borrower of the Night. I wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars - that would really be more accurate. Looking forward to listening to the next one in the series. The tone of these very much reminds me of the TV show Remington Steele and John Smythe as the charming, international art thief brings things awfully close. Since I believe the TV series came later, I wonder if the producers had read these at all.

This is one of my favorites of the Vickie Bliss series so far and I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it's all the red herrings, or the descriptions of Stockholm, or the idea of an artist who can freehand silhouettes. Whatever it was, the atmosphere and the juxtaposition of jolliness and danger all combined to give me a great read.

I can't help it. Against all odds I actually enjoy these books about Vicky Bliss. Light-hearted, undemanding reading about an art historian who gets into dangerous circumstances due to her connection to a 'gentleman thief'.When Vicky is tricked into helping her raffles-type 'boyfriend' to rob a Swedish recluse of his archealogical treasures all three of them are held captive on a remote island and forced to co-operate with a gang of unscrupulous relic thieves who have every intention of disposing of them the minute the 'treasure' is found. As usual, the two heroes in the shape of Vicky and John (Raffles) save the day but is John killed at the end or not? I think he will return.Light entertainment at its best.
