About this audiobook

The author of the “masterfully plotted, compulsive page-turner” (The Guardian) Our House takes you on a haunting and nail-biting journey of tragedy and revenge.

The Heights is a tall, slender apartment building among warehouses in London. Its roof terrace is so discreet, you wouldn’t know it existed if you weren’t standing at the window of the flat directly opposite. But you are. And that’s when you see a man up there—a man you’d recognize anywhere. He may be older now, but it’s definitely him.

But that can’t be because he’s been dead for over two years. You know this for a fact.

Because you’re the one who killed him.

With Louise Candlish’s signature dark and twisty prose, The Heights shows “the ferocity of maternal love” (Hannah Beckerman, author of If Only I Could Tell You). It is an unputdownable thriller that will keep you guessing until the final page.

    The Heights

I would say that this was more of a 3.5 star for me but I rounded up. I thought it had a unique way of being written. We follow a journalist who has an exclusive interview with the main character. It’s done in broken down pieces of her article strategically placed throughout the novel. We also follow a novel that the protagonist is writing, which again is broken up throughout the novel so you get little pieces of it as you read through the book. Also we get to follow Ellen and her ex husband Vic and see their versions of what happened. I find it interesting because in life we often have different perspectives, as individuals even if we are being placed in the same scenario. I really enjoyed having the pieces from a news article and this novel along with the character perspectives.

?The Plot: I thought this plot was well thought out albeit predictable. There was one key element that let me know exactly how this was going to end but I don’t want to spoil so I will just say that someone who reads a lot of thriller books will be able to decipher this novel pretty quickly. However the twists are fun and clever. Also I didn’t want to put it down…I wanted to complete it and get to the bottom of it even when I had decided I knew what was up.
?The characters: I wasn’t really invested in any of these characters. However I really felt for Ellen. She has dealt with grief and loss to the fullest extent and now has severe mental health issues and I just felt very empathetic to her situation. Not necessarily how she’s dealing with it in this novel but definitely how it can be life changing.
?The setting: I feel that setting was used well in this novel. There were definitely some intense moments. I feel that adding in Kierans POV and setting the mood with an actual look back to his teenage years would have helped with the atmosphere of this one.
?The ending: I did love how this ended. It was predictable to me but I thought it was still clever and well written. I didn’t find I was missing pieces by the end but I wasn’t as shocked as I’d like to be.
?Overall Enjoyment: I liked this. It wasn’t one of my new favourites but I thought it was a fun one to read with some great plot twists. The first chapter and how it ends has me hooked right away. I finished it quickly because I really wanted to know what was going on and how it would end.
