- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is an excellent book from Elmer kelton. A barbed wire salesman runs afoul of the big rancher who runs the town of Twin Wells. Captain Rinehart doesn't want fences on the open range and orders Doug Monahan out of the county. But Monahan continues and finds a rancher willing to allow the fence to protect his herd. This is no by-the-numbers white/hat/black hat western. Most of the characters have justification for their decisions and you can see the rightness on both sides. Yes, there's a gunslinging sneaky bad guy, but even his story is different than the normal evil gunman type. Well told and worth reading.
