Reviews for Pinkalicious
8 ratings3 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Pinkalicious hates school because she misses her imaginary unicorn friend named Goldilicious and she decides to take her to school one day. Her teacher Mr. Pushkin informs her that unicorns are not allowed in school and that upsets Pinkalicious and with much thought Mr. Puskin allows Goldie to stay but Pinkalicious has to teach Goldie the rules. Pinkalicious introduces Goldie to all the other kids and they have a fun fill day at school. At the end of the day Pinkalicious now thinks "School Rules". Comprehension and Pleasure Reading would be two applications for Pinkalicious
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5K to 2nd. Victoria Kann successfully writes her popular picture book character into an early reader and picks a fabulous theme for readers. In Pinkalicious School Rules!, Pinkalicious negotiates how she feels about school rules and may help readers do the same. Pinkalicious has started school, but misses her imaginary unicorn pet, Goldilicious and so 'brings' her to school. But after 'Goldie' breaks a rule and the teacher says no unicorns are allowed at school, Pinkalicious is very sad until the teacher says Goldie can stay. Really Pinkalicious is about exploring that school is not just about following rules, but can also be a space where you get to bring your imagination and therefore yourself. Early elementary readers will easily identify with Pinkalicious' process. The words are simple. There are no chapters as it's an I Can Read! Level 1 reader, and due to the character's popularity, librarians will find it stays on the shelf hardly at all. The only drawback is that, like in the picture books, Kann's computer illustrations are a bit flat and uninteresting though colorful. Here, she does incorporate the occasional whimsical detail. For example, at the end, where the children are happily playing with Goldilicious, the green hills are composited from images of green music sheets. (Is this a reference to the 'hills are alive with music' from the Sound of Music?) But this book is still recommended to public and school libraries due to the character's popularity and the quality theme of the book. Pinkalicious School Rules! will inspire young readers, especially girls who liked Kann's picture books, to try to read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Pinkalicious is wary about starting school and not having many friends there, so she brings along her unicorn Goldilicious for the day. But her teacher, Mr. Pushkin, says that Goldilicious can only stay if she follows all the school rules. This book should be a standalone, but I think having knowledge of previous Pinkalicious titles might help. For instance, it's not super obvious that Goldilicious is an imaginary friend, which is pretty crucial to the plot here. On the plus side, I like how Pinkalicious pretending to show her imaginary friend the ropes at school allowed her to become more comfortable there and realize how many real-life friends she actually had.As an early reader, this book does it job. The easy vocabulary and simple sentence structure allow beginning readers to follow along fairly easily. The topic of starting school is one that will appeal to many young readers, both female and male. The illustrations are not particularly exciting, although they serve as additional context clues for those learning to read.
