Arnold Lobel

Arnold Lobel (1933–1987) illustrated many wonderful children’s books but is most beloved for his Frog and Toad stories, including the first one, Frog and Toad Are Friends, published in 1970. The books have garnered much acclaim, including a Caldecott Honor for Frog and Toad Are Friends and a Newbery Honor for Frog and Toad Together. These were followed by Frog and Toad All Year and Days with Frog and Toad.

This book brings back the familiar Frog and Toad characters (from "Frog and Toad Are Friends") in a series of stories about the four seasons and Christmas. The stories are so cute and subtle that you almost don't even notice that they follow a calendar theme, but the fact that they do makes them especially good for linking to a discussion of the changing seasons. In these stories, the "mismatch" between the personalities of Frog and Toad is less glaring than it is in other books, as if they have matured into a comfortable relationship with each other, just as readers who have read their other adventures likely have with them. The plots are slightly more complex and tend more towards having a moral at the end, which makes this a nice bridge from an early reader towards other familiar genres, such as fairy tales and fables. One story even has a very Chekhovian twist to it as Frog and Toad try to do the same thing to help each other out without the other knowing. The pictures in this book are also amazing, especially the look on Toad's face as he goes sledding down the hill for the first time. Frog and Toad seem more grown up in this book, and children will be lucky if they have a chance to grow up with these two friends.

Reason for Reading: Ds read aloud to me as his reader.I've always enjoyed Arnold Lobel, but as a kid these Frog and Toad books didn't appeal to me so I've only discovered there charm as an adult.This book sees the two friends through the year with a story for each of the seasons, beginning and ending with winter. In the first story Frog forces Toad out of the house to enjoy the winter weather but Toad would rather be home warm and snug in his bed. Next, on a rainy Spring day Frog tells Toad a story of his childhood when his father told him Spring was just around the corner, so Frog started looking around corners trying to find Spring. Next comes summer and Toad buys two Chocolate ice cream cones to take back for him and Frog to eat. Along the way the summer sun melts them and Toad becomes a frightening mess, scaring everyone he meets along the way. Autumn is my favourite season and this was ds's favourite story. Frog finds his yard full of leaves to be raked so he decides to sneak over to Toad's place and rake his leaves, while at the same time Toad has had the very same bright idea. They both work hard all day long and as they walk home a wind picks up and they arrive back home to see that tomorrow they will have to rake their own yards. But each goes to bed feeling good about how the other must feel to have come home to find his yard raked for him. And finally we finish off with a Christmas Eve story, where Toad is worried what is keeping Frog so long to arrive and imagines all sorts of terrible things that could have happened to him on the way so he prepares a rescue kit for every possibility before he goes in search of him. Lovely stories of friendship with Lobel's usual delightful illustrations.

Bought to give to my granddaughters and so, of course, had to read it before giving.

I remember liking Frog & Toad (Are Friends) better. This one seemed more anxiety-ridden than my recollection of the other, back from when my own children were small. But maybe this one would help a child with their own anxieties?

I ordered a bunch of fantasy and thrillers from an online used book source and this was stuck in my recent order. I had to laugh at getting an "I can read" book right after reading book 100 for the year. It was like receiving some weird little trophy. I figured I might as well read it before donating to the little free library. I'm glad I did. It made me laugh more than some of the adult 'humor' books I've read lately. I would have enjoyed this as kid learning to read. The illustrations are really nice too.

This is truly a beginning, chapter book. It has a few words and big lines for those that are past Dick and Jane, but not quite to Mary Pope Osborne. Frog and Toad have lasted for decades for a reason. They’re classics. Their stories are about friendships and hope in sunny days. The book I was reading is older than I am, and yet it still has steam power in today’s very full book globe. I love Frog and Toad and kids will continue to love frog and toad well into the future.

This is a great book for beginning readers. Frog and Toad are two of the best of friends and this book takes the young reader on their adventures through the different seasons. It covers activities that Frog and Toad get involved with as the seasons change.

It is also very well illustrated so that the young reader can follow along with the story.

It will be a book that I believe that your child would love to read again and again. I highly recommned this book for children who are starting out to read.

How beautiful it is to read this kind of books, in my childhood I only read "Sapo and Sepo are friends" and "Sapo and Sepo inseparable." Reading this text makes me relive beautiful moments and laugh even more out loud at what happened with these characters. A trip to childhood that leaves a taste of happiness. I have very fond memories of these two characters because they were part of my childhood readings. Sapo and Sepo are two very different but inseparable friends. They complement each other, and that is what strengthens them. The challenges they face are everyday and simple (like, for example, losing a button from a jacket), and it is quite curious how the author manages to awaken our interest through beautiful simplicity. Humor is very present, and the illustrations are very pleasant. Their reading is always very relaxing for me. I hope that some publishing house is encouraged in the future to release a collection of all the stories in tribute to their author. It would be a shame for these two characters to fall into oblivion. (Translated from Spanish)

Frog and Toad Are Friends was the title I remembered from childhood (and, let's face it, basically the core message of the series), but it turns out this is the one I remembered most of the images from: toad covered in chocolate ice cream with cone horns on his head, Frog falling off the sled and Toad king-of-the-worlding down the hill till a cruel crow lets him know he's alone, causing him to crash immediately and spectacularly; Frog and Toad out hunting for Spring. It's nice.

"Frog and Toad All Year" is another book with the commonly known characters of Frog and Toad. This book is about adventures that Frog and Toad have during mostly the winter months. This book is specifically great for teaching comparing/contrasting between characters, making predictions, and making inferences. The easy-to-read text uses sight words and common vocabulary that students of about 2nd grade will love to read. Because most students are already familiar with the characters, and the simple illustrations, students will be able to focus on comprehension as they read.

One of four Frog and Toad story collections from Arnold Lobel - companion volumes include Frog and Toad Are Friends, Frog and Toad Together and Days with Frog and Toad - this charming beginning reader was (along with the other three books) a girlhood favorite of mine, and when I return to the world of those two amphibian friends, as an adult, it is with the happy feeling of coming home. In five brief selections, we see Frog dragging a very reluctant Toad out of the house one snowy Winter day, to go sledding (Down the Hill); we listen to the tale of Frog's childhood search for Spring, when he was "not much bigger than a pollywog" (The Corner); and we accompany Toad as he sets out on an ill-fated journey to provide his friend with a treat, one hot summer day (Ice Cream). The Surprise, set in October, as the leaves are falling, sees each of the two friends performing a kind deed for the other; while Christmas Eve brings the collection full-circle, with a worried Toad imagining that Frog has experienced some mishap in the snow, on his way to their holiday celebration.

These Frog and Toad stories have such charm! I am always won over by Lobel's understated sense of humor, and by his sensitive appreciation for the complexities of friendship between two very different characters. It doesn't hurt that his artwork is so very appealing, with its simple lines and colors, and drolly expressive faces, either! I was particularly struck, during this latest reread, by the similarities between Down the Hill, which sees a grumpy Toad returning home to his warm bed, and The Cookies (found in Frog and Toad Together), in which he grouchily returns home to bake a cake! Christmas Eve also stood out to me, with Toad's determination (even if occasioned by some rather silly worries) to rescue his friend. All in all, a wonderful book for beginning readers, one I recommend to little frogs and toads everywhere!

I feel as though this book will give kids more confidence. It's more along the lines of a chapter book, but an easy read. All frog and toad books, I feel are read aloud books for students, allowing them to be able to read in class but not so much with hard difficulty. Frog and toad are friends that do everything together. They are simple reading books with great understanding.

This is a good example of fantasy because it has frogs and toads behaving as humans. This is something that takes imagination on the part of the reader to believe, but the author creates a world where you could see this being the norm.

Toad is taking a nap for a long long time, and frog wants to play! Toad tells Frog, I will get up when it is May. Frog then cleverly tricks Toad into believing it is May, but when they go outside, he realizes something isn't right because of all the snow still on the ground.

Frog and Toad share many adventures in this early reader by Arnold Lobel. Early readers enjoy the chapter book set up, but each "chapter" is really a simple story. These stories are excellent models for story writing, retelling, and dramatization in PK - 1st grade.

Toad and Frog are classics. You can't go wrong. Toad cracks me up! He is so strong willed and grumpy, yet he truly loves his friend Frog. My favorite is when they go sledding and Toad really does not want to go and some how also misses the point that he slid down the hill alone and goes home to bed instead. Frog and Toad, like Toot and Puddle, show kids that they don't have to be the same to be best friends.

This book is an example of fantasy. Since frogs don't really wear clothes this cannot be a real life situation. I really don't like the plot in this book, I don't feel like it is not very well developed and I think that the writer can make a better attempt at actually making the book interesting for the reader instead of just regurgitating words onto the page that make sense but don't provide interest.
