About this audiobook
A beloved classic that captures the powerful bond between man and man’s best friend.
Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. It doesn’t matter that times are tough; together they’ll roam the hills of the Ozarks.
Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past.

I remember this story for my childhood. The scene that impacted me the most was him chopping down a tree. At the age of 16, and with permission of my parents, I chopped down a large pine tree with a two-headed axe. It was about 3 ft in diameter and took me a little over 8 hours, but I remember sitting down for a PBJj and some rest when a slight breeze picked up and I started to hear the snapping of tiny fibers deep within the tree, just like in the book. I also remember not being able to make a full fist for 3 days because my forearms were so sore. I also grew up in Oregon where I would occasionally run across a red fern, which always brought me right back to the story. I don't recall crying back then, and I didn't cry now, but the story has had a deep impact on me and it was a great joy to read again. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

This was such a sweet and good story. The last part made me cry so much. But I'm still glad I listened to it. I felt like those dogs were real friends. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5
