- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Three kids ? Jake, Jo, and Jamie ? are from unstable environments. These kids, who basically raise themselves, find joy in art and dogs. While Jake, Jo, and Jamie can?t easily change their worlds, they can find the courage to move forward. Gary Paulsen, the author The Winter Room, Hatchet, and Dogsong, is a Newbery Honor winner.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book contains three novellas about young adults facing tough family situations. I really enjoyed it because it offered a different point of view of childhood, and there was nothing stereotypical about it. Paulsen let us experience emotion as the characters, so it wasn’t as if we were looking down into their lives; we were living right along with them. The first and last story were my favorites, but overall this is worth a read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Grim, moving stories about young people in desperate circumstances finding ways to survive their lots in life. Real, vivid and raw.
